It can't end soon enough for me! NFL football player Korey Stringer and singer Aaliyah tragically pass away. Supermodel Niki Taylor, whom I've adored for 10 years, nearly dies from a car accident. She still has a long road to a full recovery. And Corina Morariu, the classiest act of all in tennis, is stricken with leukemia. These are just a few of the many tragic happenings in 2001. But the saddest and most unbelievable tragedies in 2001 were the terrorist acts that took place on September 11 in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvannia. I was in Manhattan the morning of September 11, and it was a heart breaking experience. Though I am proud to say New York City pulled together in this monumental crisis. Ever since the World Trade Center was first bombed in 1993, I thought the terrorists would try to come back to the World Trade Center to finish the job. And they did. I just didn't know they would be so successful. I hope to never experience anything like that again. And I hope 2002 brings much joy and happiness to the world. But I wouldn't count on it.

P.S. - Wouldn't it would be wonderful if Corina could be playing WTA tennis again next year? Would her ranking be protected?

Don`t forget the planecrash last week, maybe in America it`s different but here everybody seemed to have forgotten about it as soon as it came out that it was an accident and no attack, like it was less worse. I think that`s realy, realy bad
It would be great if she would fully recover and could play again and I am sure she would get a protected ranking like other players.

Plus accidental shot down of Russian airplane.. And, well, the year is not over yet, so we can expect some stuff yet. But generally, these years in Oriental horoscopes have never eben quiet and that was years when history often was made.
2001, 1989, 1941, 1917, 1905, if these numbers tell you anything..

the cat in the hat ,

I know exactly what you mean, A huge fan of korey stringer-been to a lot of his games, that shook me hard, he was such a talented guy.
Ofcorse there is Aliyah so young and with a voice of an angel, who could deny her talent, or her beauty, then there is walter mathau and jack lemmon, both of them defined the sixties and died in 2001. Carol Lewis of one of the shows i loved most(All in the family and MASH were so briiliant,) died and broke hearts.
Then there is joey Ramone-who defined punk, not to mention all of the hollywood couples that broke up this year(tom cruise and nicole kidman, meg ryan and dennis quaid, kim basinger and alec baldwin, and jim carrey and renee wegger,
One of my fav tennis player morariu was diagnosed with lukemia, tons of other celebs passed on.

Then ofcorse, right before i came to this board i went through some of the hardest things i have ever been to i lost my best friends(kyle and alexander) in a car crash, my granpa died of a brain tumor, I decided to move to new york with my friends and go to college here, and exactly a month and some weeks of living in new york, september 11 came to me(I live in manhattan), I saw thousands of people dying and smoke everywhere) as i was walking my dog from central park-Manhattan, i lost my friend jim and katey to the september 11 bombings. My cousin gaby was raped a week later(Paris,FRANCE) i was forced to move because of all the smoke during the bombings( i lived in my friends house for two weeks before i could come back to my home.)

THIS year has been soo hard for me, but i have learned so much, and i have lived through soo much, i'm grateful i have a girlfriend, a apartment, healthy parents, good friends, family, pets, a acting career, etc.(i'm glad i moved to new york, because i saw atleast a month of new york being normal, and i love this city with all my heart. In the end i can say i will never be quite the same person i was, but life moves on and if i die today, i die, i am not afraid of death, don't get me wrong i love life and earth and its people and etc, but things have to move on, so the year 2001 has been tough, but we grow and we learn, so 2001 is already in the past!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Inspiration comes to me here from new york and from the rest of the world
NIIKKI TAYLOR's fight is herroiic she lost 90% of her blood and still managed to live, all the famalies in new york, all the palins that crashed, afghanistanian women and children who have been treated like slaves by the taliban, and my native country bulgaria where thousands of people died from the muslim natiolists and the russian planes, and ofcorse all the people that died from the swiss flights, hey we all have it tough that is life.

I am looking forward to 2002. 2001 was a good year tennis-wise (except for the very end). But the tragedies of the fall were just devastating. I hope that 2002 can bring as good or better a year in tennis, and a return of Corina to the Tour. I hope we can feel a bit more safe too in the new year.

Good riddance to 2001.

Of course all the events listed above were truly awful, but on a personal level 2001 has been hell.

If there is a God, he/she has a warped sense of humour imo.

Goodbye 2001, I hope you go to hell.

I'm impressed with your story bulgar.
You're really a fighter, keep movin' cause life can't stop!

I also lost this year my grandma due to Alzheimer
and my aunt due to a fuc*ing breast cancer, which she fought against for 10 years. I'm so proud of her. She died, finishing her mission at this crazy Earth, being such a fighter she was. She will finally rest in peace!

You all make fine points. You are sensible and sensitive people! Irma and Ys, I haven't forgotten about the plane crash last week in New york and the plane that was recently and tragically shot down over the Black Sea. I just couldn't include everthing. Otherwise I would still be writing my first post on this thread!

P.S. - In one of the classiest moves of the year, Yevgeny Kafelnikov gave his prize money from winning the 2001 Kremlin Cup to the families of the victims killed in the plane tragedy over the Black Sea. That was very touching of Yevgeny. He seems to be really growing as a person. Udachi Yevgeny!

P.P.S. - Bulgar, that was a wonderful post! And I'm glad you're an animal lover!

I would also add the innocent victims in Afghanistan (those who aren't Taliban) of the war and all those in Africa and other continents who still have hunger and diseases which can be cured if they have enough money.
It's also sad to see the war in Israël still going on.

Stop terrorism!
Stop the bombing!
Stop the war!

More violence doesn't help!

tfannis, you make some good points. We should try and remember everyone. One good thing about the Taliban's ouster, is that Afghanistan's women and children can live their lives much more freely and openly.

yep. this has been a terrible year.

in tennis, its been just as bad. Martina with her horrible season. Venus didn't even end up #1. Kournikova was gone the whole time. And the whole Corina thing was heartbreaking.

The only bright spot was the emergence of the 2 belgians.

Well, SB4P, I think you're forgetting one major aspect of the 2001 season...but, to each their own. I guess it's been good for some fans, bad for others. Here's to a healthy 2002 for everyone! It should be a great season...now just about 6 weeks away.
