stands in Guangzhou were absolutely packed today for early round match involving non-Chinese players :bigwave:

not to mention Zhengzhou last week, when the last Chinese player fell in the QF

yet there are those on here who will use empty stands as a reason to criticize Chinese tournaments

Thats good! This is time of year the WTA makes most of their annual revenue, and big crowds, and good fields are what makes this sport great!

Well duh Svitolina is a superstar in Asia. She has won the Asian Grand Slam: Singapore, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Baku. :grin2:

The stadiums were empty for the matches I saw. They were 10 people watching Muguruza. 12 people watching Puttintseva. etc.
Bring all those tournaments back to Europe. Even Istanbul was always standing room only.

If we even argue that there are not enough people in China of all places to fill a small tennis court then they are not that interested. At least bring the Euro indoor swing back. I loved those tournaments.

They have definitely appeared better. However, Zhengzhou last week was a temporary main court as the 8,000 main court isn't ready until next year, so it'll be interesting to see how it is next year:

Likewise Guangzhou looks so much better this year, but it is definitely a new main court, and not this court from last year:

That was the final featuring a Chinese player who had been tearing up the field without dropping a set, and that was a 10,000 stadium. Last week in Zhengzhou it was about 8 rows by 25 x 2 sides.

Nanchang had it's usual court, and that was so-so throughout:

The new Zhengzhou stadium kind of defeats the object of my next point, but if they can generally go to having 500-2000 courts looking relatively full instead of those figures in 10,000 or 15,000 arenas, with a decent atmosphere, then it will be so much better.

One thing I will say is that the Chinese certainly don't mind staying late - it was after 12.30am when the Zhang match finished and there was a similar number remained throughout the evening session.

Did Guangzhou move to a new stadium, or did they just add new seating closer to the court? That tournament used to be so weird, with only fifty people in the stadium and they were all sitting a mile away from the court. Now they are much closer and more people are there.

can't wait to come back to this when Wuhan is 90% empty

I have to agree that Guangzhou had a good crowd today in the Svitolina match which I watched highlights, and the Zhengzhou final, but Wuhan was always the problem, and lesser known matches in all of the other tournaments. if a big name doesn't play, no one comes to watch, and it's not like in Europe when no one means at least 100-500 ppl, in Asia it's literally 10 ppl watching a Zidansek vs Paolini match for example

Zhengzhou was a success imo in its inaugural year - hopefully the new centre court in 2020 won’t spoil that.

Guangzhou is definitely an improvement to previous years - or is that because of the new court?

Nanchang seemed ok.

Let’s see how Wuhan goes before declaring the Asian swing a success for the first time since roadmap.

Although if you want to see real success, go back to the late 90’s and the European / USA fall indoor season.
