NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Murray's five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open final was watched by more than 16 million on TV, an increase from last year's 11.8 million and the highest total since 2007.

CBS Sports says 16.2 million viewers caught all or part of Murray's 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 win. It was an increase of 4.4 million from Djokovic's victory against Rafael Nadal in the 2011 final and 10.3 million more than Nadal's victory over Djokovic two years ago, according to Nielsen numbers provided by the network.

The men's final was originally scheduled for Sunday but it was pushed back a day due to rain.

CBS Sports also said Tuesday that Serena Williams' three-set win against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday had 17.7 million viewers, the highest total for the women's final since 20.1 million for Serena's victory against sister Venus in 2002.

The Serena/Vika match was actually much better too. the 5 set slugathon was interminable with some very low quality tennis in the main.

As for Murray, who would have thought a boring minger woud attract more viewers in America than Nadal!

A lot more Americans watching TV this year? I think about half of the numbers came from VODs.

Yesterday’s men’s final at the National Tennis Center in New York, which was pushed to a Monday finish for the fifth consecutive year because of weather, was seen in an average of 2.3 percent of homes in the top 56 U.S. television markets, Jerry Caraccioli, a spokesman for the CBS Corp. (CBS) network, said in a telephone interview, citing Nielsen Holdings NV. (NLSN) That’s 12 percent lower than the 2.6 rating Djokovic’s four-set victory over Rafael Nadal in 2011 drew.

... Serena Williams’s fourth U.S. Open title two days ago, a three-set win over Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, drew a 3.4 major-market rating, 3 percent higher than a year earlier when Williams lost to Samantha Stosur in the final.

Also..

Due to the nature of live sports programming the ratings for CBS (US Open Overrun) are approximate and subject to more than the typical adjustments in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

Note: Both of last night’s Monday Night Football games were simulcast on the CBS affiliate in the teams’ local markets (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Oakland and San Diego). As a result, CBS numbers may be a bit inflated and subject to more than typical adjustments in the finals.

Those numbers are for metered markets (cities) not overall viewers.

Sunday afternoon with a football game lead-in vs. Monday afternoon. The men's numbers are actually pretty good considering.

The most Hilarious is that all articles are entitled "More than 16 million watch Murray's U.S. Open win" and at the bottom of the artcile it is written that Serena Williams' three-set win against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday had 17.7 million viewers,

What a shame , such an ATPtards

but still we are always comparing Saturday's women's ratings to Sunday's men's , it's not accurate either

Women's tennis is heading into a new Golden Age now and men's tennis will decline.
two veterans and one new star are doing the show.... Stacey Allaster probably is praying for Vika to win more Slams and Rena and Masha to stay in the tour for the next 5 years (at least)
But the rest of the tour - only 9 wins vs top 3 ))))

PS : Who can open such a thread on MTF?

These numbers should give the USTA enough of a reason to switch its format to the Women's final on Sunday afternoon and the Men's on Monday afternoon. This will allow a day for each between the semis and final like all other slams. Its just better tennis, since typically each finalist has had a day of rest.

Poor Novak.

they have already announced that most probably Men's finals will be regularly on Mondays and there will be no Super Saturdays

i wouldn't call it a golden age. However, the improving WTA has been a long talk for a few years now and how much they are catching up to ATP as ATP has stalled for a while now. For the golden age to happen there are things that should happen first radwanska has to keep getting aggressive and get more comfortable with it. Kvitova needs to be more consistent and Azarenka needs to keep going the way she is. Also the likes of Robson, Stephens, McHale and others born from 89 above needs to keep improving their game. I actually think that Sharapova will be retiring same time as Serena, though i hope that isn't the case.

the question is how would the numbers look if Federer was in the final ans Serena wasn't in final

you cannot sum up tennis based on one player, American are patriots and not so much tennis lovers

nobody cares about "If" . Men's Finals were more popular than women's because Nadal and Federer are popular , not ATP mugs or the rest of ATP tour

This year has just proven that the Final between №1 and №4 of WTA is more interesting to the public than №1 vs №4 of ATP.

What is more WTA has an american national star in its cast , it's good for their profit and for Grand Slam's profit

the question is how would the numbers look if Federer was in the final ans Serena wasn't in final
When Stakhovskis and Simons were telling their bullshit almost everyone was asking " how would the numbers look if Serena and Sharapova were in Finals "
Now we know that Serena is enough to show who is more marketable

All these ATP mugs' statements were based on temporary success of ATP because of Nadal and Federer
