Seems like ancient history now but here's how France's #1 tennis mag ranked the women on the basis of their results in 2005:

1. Kim Clijsters - most tournaments won including a major and the IW-Miami double.
2. Lindsay Davenport - failure to win a major but 6 titles and a consistent season places her second
3. Amélie Mauresmo - her victory over Pierce at the masters secures her third place. Won 4 tournaments and 14 times vs top ten players - more than anyone else.
4. Mary Pierce - 2 finals at the majors and one more at the masters.
5. Justine Henin - a major, an unbeaten record on clay and 10 wins over top tenners in spite of injury problems.
6. Maria Sharapova
7. Venus Williams
8. Elena Dementieva
9. Serena Williams
10. Patty Schnyder
11. Nadia Petrova
12. Nathalie Dechy
13. Anastasia Myskina
14. Nicole Vaidisova
15. Francesca Schiavone
