Actually DOKIC was playing ACCEPTABLY well for a 22 seed.

The first number is Dokic's and the second number is Pierce's. Pierce's DIFFERENTIAL being +16 is very nice!!! Dokic at +1 is fine too

but Pierce with 13 aces to just 3 DF's and Dokic with only 7 aces and 12 double faults is atrocious!!!

Congratulations Mary you should have won easier but way to guts it out. Dokic is finding a bit more consistency on her ground game but still need to learn how to hit an effective second serve. Mary's first and second serve are superior!

Aces 7 13

Double Faults 12 3

Unforced Errors 39 31

Winners (Including Service) 40 47

Break Point Conversions 4 of 8 = 50 % 6 of 12 = 50 %

Net Approaches 10 of 15 = 67 % 5 of 7 = 71 %

Total Points Won 100 115

Fastest Serve 101 MPH 111 MPH

Average 1st Serve Speed 96 MPH 98 MPH

Average 2nd Serve Speed 89 MPH 83 MPH

Even if Dokic didn't play a bad match I didn't like her attitude at the end. When down 5-6, she tooked ridiculous chances with her serve, like trying aces with her second serve. It's like she didn't care anymore. Yes it did work, but 8 times out of 10 it wouldn't have worked.

I'm happy for Mary, great win. She could have give up at 5-1.

It deserved more than a second round at a GS. Great match
I agree!
Could've easily been
a quarterfinal match.

I see the point about risk but if you were facing someone who could hit unreturnable returns of Graf first serves when she was on form and who looked good today I can see why Jelena might think a second serve ace was a good idea.

jelena was desperate so i think it was the correct choice to hit those 2nd serve aces. mary was playing unbelievable and definately above her normal play at that point in the match

well she would not have to go for SECOND SERVE ACES if she HAD A SECOND SERVE!! Like you know one with a thing called SPIN (ie. kicker or slice into the body or out wide!)
Dokic doesnt know the meaning of spinning her second serve in.
Mary should really have finished her off in two sets, but I'll take the win. The draw has really opened up for her and I think a QF is not out of the question!

I didn't see the early part of the 3rd set but I followed the scores on the internet and Jelena had only 2 or 3 unforced errors and 9 winners when the score was 5-1. Then Mary suddenly kicked it up a gear. Her winners kept rolling in.

It was amazing to see Jelena hit those 2nd serve aces. I don't know I think she had a doublefault in that game as well. Whether it's guts or she didn't care anymore I don't know.

But I did like her fighting spirit in the second set. It was great to hear her yell 'Come on!' when she broke back.

I think that it was vital for Jelena to go for those second serves. Mary was eating them up. I've always felt that Mary has had one of the best return of serves along with Monica Seles(of course now we got the great returns of Serena and Lindsay too) and it showed today. She was belting them. Had Jelena not gone for those second serves, Mary would probably have had hit a winner of of them or at least a very offensive shot.
