SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Ai Sugiyama upset No. 5 seed Lisa Raymond 7-6, 6-0 Tuesday in the first round of the State Farm Women's Tennis Classic.

Raymond was coming off winning the Kruger St. Jude's single final in Memphis, Tenn., last Saturday night. Raymond beat Sugiyama in the semifinals of that tourney. She was the only seeded player in action Tuesday in the morning session.

Sugiyama moves on to face Nicole Pratt, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Meilen Tu.

``I didn't play my best tennis in Memphis,'' Sugiyama said. ``Today, it was my turn.''

In the night's only match featuring a seeded player, No. 6 Barbara Schett was to face Jelena Jankovic.

The top four seeds in the $583,000 tournament will play in the second round Wednesday.

The other seeded players include Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati, Martina Hingis and Serena Williams. Venus Williams, ranked No. 1 for the first time in this week's WTA rankings, is taking a three-week rest after being upset by Sandrine Testud in the Dubai Open on Friday.

Other winners Tuesday included Tina Pisnik and Tatiiana Panova.
