Sugiyama - 2000 Australian Open (def. Pierce)
Likhovtseva - 2000 Australian Open, 2002 Wimbledon (def. Serena, Clijsters)
Schiavone - 2001 French Open
Suarez - 2002 French Open (def. Mauresmo)

I'm expecting Suarez and Sugiyama to advance here, based on recent performances - but it would really be great for Elena to win and add 1 more GS QF. She really is too talented to have won only 2 titles in her career.

Of course, only two will go through here but all four have a great opportunity now that the top seeds in these sections are gone (or never played). I thought that there deserves to be a thread discussing these players and this part of the draw, even though their fans may not be as vocal as others.

Predict, cheer, comment away.

Ai has been a little off-form, but is still managing wins. Schiavone has always impressed me, but failed to live up to the big matches.

Confidence for whomever comes thru will be nice - and hopefully spur them on to bigger things.

Paola's run to the QF of last year's French Open was quite funny to think of.

She took out:
Sandrine Testud round one
Nathalie Dechy round three
and
Amelie Mauresmo round four.

She basically destroyed the French Fed Cup team.

I hope she and Ai get to the QF again. :bounce:

Head-to-head Sugiyama vs. Schiavone

Schiavone leads 1-0

1 Rome May 20 2001 F Schiavone-Q - A Sugiyama 6-4 6-0

I hope Suarez and Sugiyama will win. I haven't seen Suarez play recently, but she seems to have improved. Schiavone is playing well lately. I think Suarez will win and Schiavone has the game to beat Sugiyama.
