Madrid used to get better draws for years with Monica, ASV, Lindsay going to Madrid every year, but this year (except for Chanda) the draw is very weak AND open.

See for youself.

Strasbourg draw:

Dokic (1) -- bye
Golovin (WC) vs. Q
Q vs. Granville
Matevzic vs Bovina (5)

Daniilidou (4) vs. Krasnoroutskaya
Bartoli vs. Beigbeder (WC)
Pisnik vs. Q
Razzano vs. Zvonareva (6)

Likhovtseva (8) vs. Kruger
Callens vs. Harkleroad
Mikaelian vs. Q
Loit vs. Dementieva (3)

Farina Elia (7) vs. Cho
An. Barna vs. Cohen Aloro
Benesova vs. Morariu
Myskina (2) -- bye

5 players from the top 20. Would you try to predict a winner there?

Now here is Madrid draw:

1 RUBIN, Chanda (USA)

1 (!) player from the top 20. This is Tier II tournament. Right? Is this a joke?

I'd be really sirprised if Chanda doesn't win.

Chanda is a very experienced player and she does know when to peak... I'm sure she'll do a lot better this time if she has to play against Magui. Also, Chanda had success on clay, so she should do well.

i think molik, serna, tulyaganova and perhaps even zuluaga, martinez are contenders in madrid. chanda is very beatable especially with her performance in rome being so poor. i guess chanda could get some motivation from her rome performance but she isn't the only player with a chance for the title. fernandez can play solid tennis on clay and marraro can play great tennis although it usually doesn't last for a whole tournament more like one match.

but i do agree that the field is very week.
