Being seeded 17-24 is important because it allows you to be seeded against the 9-16 seeds in the third round, rather than the 1-8 seeds. That's possibly the difference between Serena (eek!) or Amanda (yay!).

Code:
22 (22)	V. ZVONAREVA	1237.75
23 (24)	N. DECHY	1229.00	ROME 3R	73
24 (23)	A. PISTOLESI	1207.00	ROME 2R	27
25 (27)	C. MARTINEZ	1135.00	ROME 2R	68
Dechy next plays S. Williams and is already in the third round.

Pistolesi next plays Pennetta, and then would play the winner of the Mauresmo/Krasnoroutskaya match.

Martinez next plays Gagliardi, and then would play the winner of the Serna/Hantuchova match.

Seeing that...Dechy will almost definitely lose her next match. So her points stop there. That would guarantee Zvonareva a spot in the Top 24.

Pistolesi will pass Dechy if she beats Pennetta, but I'm not willing to give her that win yet.

Martinez has lost to Gagliardi in the past, but Conchita whipped Manu at Indian Wells, and this is clay, so she should beat her. She has a lot of points to get past the other two, but a win in the third round could get her there, particularly if she beats #9 Hantuchova.

I like Conchi's chances. I think Vera is safe...provided Serena doesn't have a meltdown against Dechy.

Is that right? I thought it was random how 17-32 matches up to 1-16? Not that I'm any sort of expert on draws, in fact I find them a great mystery!

Also take in account that Venus and Bovina are questionable for RG... so this all may be a moot point. :)

It's not random... it's like Hurley says it is.

#1-#8 can only play #25-#32 in 3rd round
#9-#16 can only play #17-#24 in 3rd round

Previous history shows that.

I was thinking about this too. But in my perfect world, everyone always plays all the majors. Even when I don't like the girls, I still want them in it. So I'm going to ignore any potential withdrawals until I'm forced to acknowledge them.

1-8 plays 25-32 in the 3rd round
9-16 plays 17-24 in the 3rd round

1-4 plays 13-16 in the 4th round
5-8 plays 9-12 in the 4th round

Those are relatively new developments, but I think it makes the playing field more fair, and it makes every seeding spot important.

I don't understand why they don't have it set 1 vs. 32, 2 vs. 31, 3 vs. 30... etc. for every major. The rankings always change... and I think it's only fair to reward people for their seeding.

so the #32 seed would always be forced to draw the #1 in the world? That'd be a coveted spot

Thanks for clarifying (and sorry to doubt you!). I agree it's much better and fairer that way.

In some ways I agree they should be fixed 1 vs 32 etc, but I think I once heard the reason they don't do that is to avoid having exactly the same matches in every slam if the rankings don't change for a while.

Also, the players within a few rankings of each other are generally not that far apart in terms of strength..so I think it's better to randomize a bit..as long as they hold the current seedings they use presently.

Unless my math is wrong, it looks set to me:

Code:
22 (22)	V. ZVONAREVA	1237.75
23 (23)	A. PISTOLESI	1228.00
[b]24 (27)	C. MARTINEZ	1226.00	ROME QF	159[/b]
25 (24)	N. DECHY	1225.00
Conchita beat two Top Ten players already this week, and looks to be ahead of Dechy by one point. So she will be seeded 24.

Unless someone ranked ahead of her pulls out, Dechy will be stuck heading the 25-32 group...which could equal Serena again, in the third round of Roland Garros.
