Sorana-Mihaela starts the 2019 with a very solid straight-sets win over the polish #1 :cheer: :cheer:
She seemed to have put a lot of work in during the off-season so let's hope it pays off and she'll have a really good year :armed:

Good start with a QF in Shenzhen, then a disappointing loss at the Aus Open but today she reached a new low point: lost in Doha QR1 and got bageled by doubles specialist and ranked #651 Aoyama :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

Budapest Rd 1. Sorana beat Anna Bondar (#223) 4-6 6-3 6-4.

A win is a win. In all honesty, Bondar played a pretty good match and served very well. Sorana finally wore her down.

Out of nowhere gets a top15 win over Keys :cheer:

She did really good in Madrid over the last years so hopefully she has a good showing this time as well, especially given she clearly looks in the best physical shape of basically her whole career :yeah:

Sori won two matches today at Nurnberg. She beat Flipkens 7-6(6) 6-2 and #301 Paar 6-4 6-7(6) 6-0. She should have won in straight sets after being up 5-2 and holding several match points. Thankfully, she put that behind her and destroyed Paar in the final set.

It's nice to see her string a couple wins together heading into the French. She might be a little worn out next week, but who knows what kind of draw she gets? She might as well go ahead and win as much as she can this week.

Into the semis here, where she'll play the winner of Friedsam-Putinseva that's already past 3 hours and not really over. Go get those ranking points, Sori :cheer:

The way she fought the whole Juvan match was :worship:-worthy. Fingers crossed she can now take advantage of the open draw.

Lost in 2 TB's to #136 Bolsova.

Opportunities like these don't come every day. I can't believe she couldn't put her ducks in a row and prepare well for this match...

The (rather) disappointing year for the Romanian girls continues. At least I have the feeling they are all sliding down the rankings and losing winnable matches more often than not. Instead of the hoped Begu-Cirstea R4, now watch 2 ova's getting that far. :[

She's apparently injured, but tried to play through it anyway.
"I played with an abdominal [muscle] tear. It happened in the first round, but I tried to push myself and play R2 because I thought I had a chance and favorable draw. It's a fairly serious injury, grade 3 tear of about 2 cm. It prevented me from playing how I wanted."
"My serve was a joke. I served at 80km/h because I couldn't [do more] due to pain. I would need about 3-4 weeks off, so most likely would be back right in time for Wimbledon."

So unlucky given the draw she had here

Sori is now struggling with this abdominal injury after she was out almost a year with the shoulder problems, the same injury that sidelined Begu for many months, Niculescu is missing like half the season for years now, Dulgheru is in a category of her own entirely... it feels like it's such a rough time lately for Tennis Romania with basically Halep the only one that had no injury problems and could play freely in the last years. It's all pretty worrying given that the current players are, let's say, in the second half of their careers. Tbh I'm already getting curious who will be the first to announce a retirement :awww: :sobbing:

I'm kind of surprised Sori is playing Wimbledon given her abdominal issue, but I guess the first round prize money is too much to ignore. I hope she's actually healthy.

Tough first round draw against Anisimova. She'll have her hands full in that one.

Pretty sure Sorana doesn't care about nor need the paycheck, I think she got her recovery done. Ofc it's hard with no match prep on grass but she looked pretty good against Anisimova even if she lost 3&3. It was very close actually, maybe if she could have that missed volley at game point twords the end back, she might have been able to clutch it.

Three consecutive R1 losses (on clay) after Wimbledon... and now out of nowhere she makes third round at the US Open

Good wins against Siniakova and Bolsova. She didn't like routine her opponents, it was pretty much a struggle except the last set ag Bolsova, but I'd say she looks in good shape atm :cheer:

This does seem completely out of nowhere. I thought she was one of the walking byes of the 1st round. Shows what I know.

Taylor Townsend will be a tough match up for her. Sori will have to hit a lot of passing shots, of which she is capable of doing.
