It's not the ideal draw, but honestly I'd be happy for her to at least get out of the first round. She hasn't worked with Joyce for very long, so I'm not expecting a lot from this tournament.

Not surprised it's on last tonight. America's most recent slam champions should be a bigger deal, but they're both in rough parts of the tennis careers.
I really hope they both bring their A-game, as they're two of my favorites. Sloane tends to care more when she's against a notable opponent, so I doubt it will be an easy match for Sonya, win or lose.

It's been awhile, and I'm a little out of practice with this... but lets do this!!!

MATCH SUMMARY

It was announced that Michael Joyce was on a trial basis, but if she keeps playing this solid, then pay the man Sofia, and make a real go with him! Nothing over the top from Sofia tonight, she didn't try to continually crush the ball... it was just nice solid tennis from her. She worked the angles and made Sloane work for her points, also sprinkle in a few Sofia Kenin drop shots, and it turned into an enjoyable match to watch.

Not to say that there wasn't a few ugly errors and service games that got iffy, but by and large, Sofia showed a lot of patience tonight. Pray she keeps that up! 🙏

Who knows how the match with Rybakina will go, but if if she plays a good tough match like tonight, then Sofia should feel good about her run here.
