Generation "Slack":

Dokic - doesn't seem to care that she's dropped 2 levels
Bovina - pulled a disappearing act
Myskina - lacking the consistency that got her Top 10
Danilidou - having probly the worst year of all of them
Hantuchova - everybody knows the story

A year ago few would have argued that these players were going to be ranked 6 through 10 by USOpen '03. Instead they have spent the year stinking up the tour with 1st and 2nd round losses. They can't even get any wins against each other because they are always seeded and they don't even win enough matches to reach each other in the draws.

And as always in tennis, if somebody's playing bad, somebody else is benefiting. So who on the tour has picked up the slack besides Vera Z, Kuznetsova and Sugiyama?

While all the "younger" players are having a difficult year - Dokic, Daniela, Bovina, Danilidou..Ashley H. and Maria Sharapova are playing with some potential.....when you look at who set the standards of younger players achieving....its a tough act to follow....namely Martina Hingis....she captured the Junior RG Championship at age 12...was ranked 380th in the world at age 14...at 15 among the top 20 and at age 16 was the #1 tennis player in the world. Talk about a meteoric rise to stardom!! :hearts:

No, she's dropped 2 levels. That puts her at, like, Level 4, by my math.

Did she forget to collect her bananas on her way to treasure island or something forcing her to start over?:p

Wait wait WAIT.

'6 though 10'?!?! 'few would have argued'?!?!?

NO not never nothing no way nada

Hantuchova and Dokic sure, but Bovina, Myskina and Daniilidou?

Myskina's a pleasant surprise, Bovina's a real surprise, and Daniilidou was always, 'if she loses weight', which she hasn't.

promising young players? Dokic was a promise in 1999/2000.

she's not a player who's promising to be a good player. she's a good player, she's only having a bad year. she has to be taken out of that list, cuz she's not a promise. she might be young and whatever. but a promise? she's not

It's kind of annoying that they can have such a bad spell and still maintain high rankings from last year's points.

Why? Twelve months is twelve months, whether or not it fits into the calendrical year.
