Injuries are part of the game weather forced or ial.

Yes, the champion should mention Serena. Everybody else knows she owns that title. and yes Monica Fans need to let that incident go and stop playing the victim.
Da Forehand isn't a Monica fan. He's a Steffi fan.

*I'm assuming you meant Da Forehand, since he's the one who brought that incident up and is trying make Steffi look like the victim*
this kind of ridiculous thread is what ruins (and HAS ruined in the past, if i may remind) this great site. serena injuring HERSELF is so far removed from monica seles being brutally stabbed on the court.
steffi should have wished monica a recovery to show support for her in a difficult time.
if someone wins this title, they earned it as there was no outside force deliberately hindering the world #1. serena injured herself doing what? playing tennis? someone tried to kill monica to prevent her from winning more slams... how can you not see the difference??? what steffi did (or didn't do) was absolutely classless, and she would probably do it differently had the the opportunity. serena is sidelined with a knee injury... many players are injured... they weren't stabbed, clubbed in the knee, shot, etc...

LOL,why should steffi graf mention seles?what ridiculous you are!
steffi never needed to do that ,though she did mention seles ,but I think it was because of the good will of steffi graf not of you all ridiculous ideas.

The deliberately hindering the world #1what you refered had nothing to do with steffi graf just as the injury of serena has nothing to do with this year's us open champinion.

I think what you said is so contemptible.

I stopped feeling sorry for Monica the third time I heard her say 'I don't want people to feel sorry for me'. That seemed to be the best way to honor a great champion. TREAT HER LIKE A CHAMPION, not a victim.

What happened to Monica in 1992 is OVER. If she were standing next to you, SHE'D tell you to stop bringing it up over and over and over. She's said enough times she doesn't want to focus onthe past, but rather the present and the future. Why is it so hard to accede to your favorite's wishes?
You mistaken the meaning of what seles said.
you are so good that you can't find what seles really want to say but you can find out it from seles fans' words.
monica was taken out of the game DELIBERATELY by a graf fan so she could not win slams for a while or permanently.
serena has a slef inflicted knee injury (my heart goes out to her, and i hope she heals well SERIOUSLY), but it's completely different than monica's situation... i don't know how u interpreted what i said, but i can assume you did not do a great job at it...

you can honestly say that you don't think monica would have won a 4th straight french open??? hmm, that dusting monica gave graf in australia and her being the 3 time defending champion would have not held water??? what game were you watching?

serena PROBABLY (over 50/50) would have won the us open, but she has a few people in the draw that can beat her... it's less of a sure thing than monica was in 93.

yeah,a graf fan is just like you , a seles fan.
there are millions of graf fans and what they all do have nothing to do with steffi graf .
I don't think so what you say monica would have won a 4th straight french open, because without seles or any other player, tennis is still a compete ,a great sports, you must compete to win not just to say.
and from 95,I never see the fact that seles won any french open ,what I could see was steffi graf winning her french open in 1999 despite all her difficultys.

kafelnikov thanked petey when he won australia once
That was one of the first tournaments I watched all the 2 weeks, when my passion for tenis was born (before I was a simple fan of Sabatini and Squillari)

It was Australia 1999 and he defeated Tomas Enqvist in the final. Nicolas Lapenti reached quarters this year, and newspapers said he was dating Anna Kournikova.
This is the same US Open when Mauresmo becomed famous.

Kafelnikov said "Thank you PETE for not coming and letting us play"
Then I though "oh, this Pete must be good...! "

you must deliberately to forget the scar isn't serious as what you all said and the injury of seles might not match some serious injurys of steffi graf and other players in their long career. but the key factor to outstanding the stabbing is that the stabbing is a good excuse of seles afterward defeats in many matchs.
you are way way way off subject and responding to ppl's posts (often twice) with things that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand. this is what pm is for...
if you want to think that monica "uses the stabbing as an excuse" find me one quote where monica refers to the stabbing after a match she lost where she even implies it had an effect.
speaking of excuses-- what about steffi's "personal problems" that caused her to lose her competitive edge?
why did people even keep playing in 93 when monica was still playing. what was the use  (this is not about what happened, only about that in normal circumstances it would have been a done deal)

at least steffi was human and discovered life (and I don't call that personal problems well I hope for her ;))

DA Forehand - Are you 9 years old or just too plain stupid to realise the HUGE difference??

If Justines or Kims or Venus's # 1 fan stabbed Serena so she couldnt play, then YES they should definitely mention her...

Congrats to Hingis-Seles and the other person (cant recall and dont wanna click back) for having some sense in this thread!

If serena was ill and suffering I think the winner might say something. But serena is fine. her surgery is over and is now recovering. should the winner mention every single player who misses the open?

did anyone mention lindsay when she missed the aussie and french? did anyone mention martina when she missed the french and wimbledon?
A very sensible post. It is one thing to mention a player who is fighting for life (eg the sign for Corina Morariu) or suffered a tragedy, but Serena is going to be fine, she's just laid up for a while. Of course if people want to mention her, that's fine too but you can't criticise them for not thinking of one particular player at a very exciting moment - they just might have one or two other more immediately relevant people on their mind, eg opponent, coach, spouse, parents, umpires, ballkids sponsors ...... BTW, I don't necessarily think Steffi was obliged to mention Monica either.

Though actually it might add to the catty factor if they started thanking, eg Martina's shoe company for wrecking her feet and preventing her from knocking them out in a quarter, and perhaps the Spanish tennis association for not installing enough grass courts to make their players dangerous at Wimbledon.
