Kim probably will say get well, because she has class. If not, it will be no big deal. Kim is so sweet.

Venus will defenitely mention her. Cmon she's her sister.

Justine will probably say this: I am #1, and players hate that I'm so small and they don't like I'm #1 and so small and so little. Serena does not like that I think that I can beat her.

LOL

Anyways, who cares? ROTF

What happened to Monica Seles was NOT an injury.
Funny, that's what her doctor called it. 'The injury to Monica's back ....'

What would be better? The 'wound'? The 'incision'? The 'old-news-but-I-don't-have-a-life-so-I'm-focusing-on-an-event-12-years-ago-by-a-player-who isn't-even-competing'?

What Monica Seles got as a result of that attack was an injury.

A narrow but not shallow incision in the upper back, which healed completely in two months or so.

They say if you fall off a horse, you should get right back on. Otherwise, it may be a long time til you can make yourself do it. Monica chose not to come back on the court as soon as she was physically able. In fact, she waited over another year.

I stopped feeling sorry for Monica the third time I heard her say 'I don't want people to feel sorry for me'. That seemed to be the best way to honor a great champion. TREAT HER LIKE A CHAMPION, not a victim.

What happened to Monica in 1992 is OVER. If she were standing next to you, SHE'D tell you to stop bringing it up over and over and over. She's said enough times she doesn't want to focus onthe past, but rather the present and the future. Why is it so hard to accede to your favorite's wishes?

Thank you Volcana- my point exactly. If we want to keep reliving it- get the tape from the Hamburg incident and pop it in your VCR and make a few stills and use it for desktop wallpaper, but if you want to keep discussing it- the subject belongs in the Blast From The Past section!

Volcana, you should of quoted DA FOREHAND instead of hingis-seles... hingis-seles was just pointing out the HUGE difference between Serena's current situation and the situation with Monica.

Now as for the question is this thread, I really don't see why the US Open Champion would mention Serena. Even if they wanted to, what would they say? Thanks Serena for not showing up? I dedicate this victory to Serena? By now those who wanted to say Get Well Soon have said it and I doubt that after winning the US Open any player ( except Venus) would even be thinking about Serena.

Here is how I think the acceptance speech should go.

"I first want to congratulate my opponent, (enter the loser's name here), for her success at this Open (applause). This has been a well-organized and well-run Grand Slam that all players would want to win, and I am very happy to have been able to win it (big applause). All the contestants did their best, played very well and should all be congratulated (applause). We should all join hands in wishing a good recovery to those who couldn't make it due to injury or illness. In particular, I wish Serena could have been here as she would have been a strong contestant and would have delighted the public with her exciting style of tennis (big long applause). Thank you all for your patronage and support for women's tennis; thank you for supporting me over the past two weeks (applause).

"I don't want to be too long. Allow me to extend my gratitude to (here enter everybody from the USTA President, WTA CEO, to the ball boys; family members, friends, coaches and... maybe lover).

"I'll see you again next year (big long applause). (Wave and smile profusely, then gingerly step out of there)."

This is EXACTLY what you should have posted to DA FOREHAND. The only reason I brought it up was because, DA FOREHAND in his original post states, "Or was that something only Steffi Graf should have done?"

He is the one who brought it up and was making implications about the Hamburg incident since certain Seles fans felt Steffi should have mentioned Monica in her acceptance speech, which she did. It was an attempt at sarcasm by DA FOREHAND. I was just pointing out the difference in situation between Serena and Monica.

You, in your haste to reply, obviously didn't realize that.

Congratulations!

You're one of the handful of posters on WTA World, who actually read and understand what is written before responding.

No - injuries are part of the sport, and if some players are healthy for this major, then good on them. There are always injuries in all sports, and that's part of the game. I don't think it cheapens things at all.

Injuries are part of the game weather forced or ial.

Yes, the champion should mention Serena. Everybody else knows she owns that title. and yes Monica Fans need to let that incident go and stop playing the victim.

If serena was ill and suffering I think the winner might say something. But serena is fine. her surgery is over and is now recovering. should the winner mention every single player who misses the open?

did anyone mention lindsay when she missed the aussie and french? did anyone mention martina when she missed the french and wimbledon?

No I dont think so, she isnt there, I think the only players you should thank in your acceptance speech are the one you beat in the final, or the ones your friends with.

otherwise you might as well real off 128 names, can you imagine.

Somehow, I think my speech draft fits the bill.

:) What a "perspicacious" observation by tenn_ace...!!!  It is far better to be "thought" a fool, than to "speak/type" and remove all traces of "doubt"...!!!

Of course they shouldn't mention her, and if they don't it doesn't mean they aren't thinking of her, or don't have empathy for her having to miss a slam, just ast in 93. And it doesn't mean they are thankful heartless and cruel.

I think it would actually be insulting to Serena if they mentioned her.

your "funny" comment says more about you than it does about anyone you think it was directed to.
