Oh, yeah, security.. I think it is rather they can't get anyone but Seles to play..I think they'll be replaced by Slovakia or Austria.

"security fears"? I find that slightly insulting towards the organization here considering how they have been playing in other european countries this last month.

This is really dissapointing news.

Gallofa, this is just crap. Their players just don't want to play it. Period. They play singles now in Eruope, and security is fine. The Indians travelled to USA to play Davis Cup, and they were not afraid of anything. The only country where there is a problem of security now is USA. Maybe we should scrap Salt-lake-City Olympics and put it into safer place? OK, USA should be relegated into World Group II. Enough of this bullshit.

Yeah, I can see how the Williams or Linsdsay Davenport blend in *any* crowd. Please, those people at Eurosport shouldn't insult the intelligence of the spectators with such comments.

What's with all these arm-chair experts??? Let's face it, some of you will ALWAYS criticize every decision made by players especially those from the U.S. The team made a decision based on THEIR best interest, why the hell does it bother you so much??? Yes there are individual players out there in Europe at the moment ,but going as a group is a different ball game ... Did you hear al kaeda's last threat???
Frankly I don't understand why the ITF expect anyone to play at this late stage in the season anyway.. No other professional sport play all these friggin weeks... Then they wonder why there are so many injuries.

It makes sense to me, travlein solo to play regular tournaments is pretty safe, but to have all the top American players and a whole crowd of Americans fans gathered under the same roof is not safe at all these days, Hun. These terrorist like to take out massive groups of us at a time, so I think the decision to boycott was right on time.

They are not scared of terrorists, they are not scared of anthrax, they are scared of clay. And doesn't your President tell you every day that we should move on with our lives and each time we change our plans terrorists win? I guess waving flags and cheering bombs is all American patriotism is good for.

This is just ridiculous. Right now Spain is no more dangerous a place to be than any other. Let's face it, prominent sportsmen & women are always going to be targets wherever they're playing. They're not going to be at any higher risk in Fed Cup than anywhere else.

They just didn't want to play in Spain, and didn't want to play because their top players pulled out. Excuses, excuses. But I guess we just have to expect that from prima donna tennis players.

I would love to hear what Monica has to say about this. She is the only one of the top ladies who agreed to play and they cancel their entry. What a load of BS.

Who'd care about Monica's opinion in this case, Capriati doesn't want to play, it is unthinkable to even imagine Davenport or Wiliamses playing on clay in Europe this time of year, and they have no more top players, so they got an excuse, they use it, and who cares about Monica Seles. Her opinion doesn't matter..

It was pretty clear Monica was willing to play and I think Chanda Rubin and Lisa Raymond were also ready. That woulda made a heck of a team right there, IMHO! I blame Billie Jean and her pride -- she never wants it to look like *she* can't get all the best players (nothwithstanding that WilliamsX2 pulled out of the finals last year) and/or take the chance of a possible loss. Anyway, I am also disappointed and shocked! Seems very unnecessary to me.......

I'm sorry, I just don't buy the security excuse. I can believe individuals not wanting to play, but bailing after Venus, Serena and Lins had already made it clear they wouldn't show for other reasons? I'm sorry, it just smells bad.

Oh yeah I forgot to add about the "replacement" team...

The AP article stated: "The four candidates to replace the U.S. are the teams that lost this season's playoff ties. Germany is the top candidate followed by Slovakia, Italy and Switzerland. The order is based on the combined ranking, as of Oct. 1, of the top two players likely to play."

So I guess they are assuming Anke would play and that's why Germany gets in...??
