Re: WTA Shenzhen 2014 Entry List

What a joke of entry list. Zakopalova would not even be seeded in Auckland, a tournament which offers half of prize money :tape:

Any player remotely considered a top player only come here under a big appearance fee (see Li and Errani). Players DO NOT like China. Get it, Stacey?

Re: WTA Shenzhen 2014 Entry List

It's logistically stupid for top players to play Shenzhen. I don't think Shenzhen in fricking January is the ideal warm-up for them as well.

spiceboy,

I think, without statistics or any evidence, you cannot make a blanket statement that WTA players do not like China. I assume you mean playing in China, and not China itself.

I can understand however, that players would prefer to play much closer geographically to the upcoming Australian Open.
Less stress already being in the Southern Hemisphere and adjusting to the time zone and particular dry heat of Australia. Now that would make more sense than stating that "Players don't like China" based solely on this entry list.

Su-Wei is not playing Shenzhen

Good choice cause I don't think this tournament is an adequate preparation for Australian Open.

Sorry, you are right. I meant "playing in China". Although the fact of staying in highly polluted cities do not help for players to like China itself.

If you remove the entry of Li Na and Sara doesn't look like an International event

Good one. Remove first two top players of any international events and they don't look like international events either. Or to the contrary, they look like international events without first two top players.

The problem I see with Shenzhen is it's just a bad preparation tournament. It's winter in Shenzhen. Last year the temperature was in single digits for parts of the tournament. Hardly ideal preparation for the 30-40 degree heat of Australia.

Secondly, logistically, unless you are getting an appearance fee or are based in Asia or are expected to win the tournament, playing Shenzhen adds a lot of costs to your expenses. The $500k boost in this aspect is useless because the majority of this money goes to the semi-finals onwards. Not many players are virtual guarantees to make the semi-finals, and the main one who is, is probably getting a big appearance fee to play anyway.

Li's presence is also a deterrent to players ranked say around 20-30, because it means they are unlikely to win the title, and would be better off in Brisbane for prize money, and better off in Auckland for winning a title.

Well, there are two top 10 there and that is very enough for a MM tournament. Besides, Vera seems to start her season in Shenzhen
