Stephens, 26 brought her retirement forward after the news she and partner, Jeff Bryce are to have a child later this year.
Stephens reached a high of 249 in the world in singles in June 2001 and 133 in doubles in 2002.
She won two ITF singles and 22 ITF doubles titles in her career which saw her play in the doubles main draw at the Australian Open in 2002 and play for the New Zealand Fed Cup team since 1995.
