GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) -- Fourth seed Meghann Shaughnessy cruised to a straight-sets win Monday over Spanish qualifier Nuria Llagostera-Vives in the Australian women's hardcourt championship.

Shaughnessy, a semifinalist a year ago, won 6-2, 6-2 under the sails at the Royal Pines Resort to move into the second round.

Australian Fed Cup player Nicole Pratt, who has lived in Florida for the past four years, beat American Lilia Osterloh 6-2, 6-1.

Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova beat Germany's Bianka Lamade 6-1, 7-5, while Patty Schnyder of Switzerland overcome the heat to beat qualifier Klara Kloukalova of the Czech Republic.

Schnyder, a former Gold Coast champion, received a warning for a racket violation. But after an extended heat break she recovered for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win.

On Tuesday, top seed Venus Williams will see her first action in the $170,000 tournament.
