World number one Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California, because of pain in her left knee, The WTA said on Sunday.
Having defended her title at Wimbledon two weeks ago, Williams was expected to return to action in Stanford where competition starts on Monday.
"Obviously, I'm very disappointed that I can't play at Stanford, especially because it would have been my first time playing there," the WTA quoted the American, who opted skip this weekend's Fed Cup quarter-final tie against Italy, as saying.
"I was looking forward to it, but I really can't play with my knee in pain right now."
