Good handshake by VJK at the net, gracious in defeat.

This was obviously not a match up between evenly strong players. By far the best opponent VJK has ever faced in her young career, and it's still a long way to get to that level.

Kasintseva got overwhelmed here, and it's not a real surprise, Ostapenko is able to overwhelm anyone on tour when she's fairly... um... stable. Still a great week for the Andorran, and it seems this girl can go places.

In recognition of her expanding girth, I propose some new nicknames for J-O:

The Latvian Leviathan
The Big O (after Roy Orbison)

Anyway, roll on the SF against You-Know-Who.

Overwhelmed is an understatement. Needs to be sent down to the minors for a lot of seasoning. That was embarrassing tennis.

Penko is in pretty good shape, the cut of her outfits sometimes is very unflattering. She could do a bit more fitness work, I'm sure, not to change her body shape but to move a bit sharper to some balls - it is like her great enemy Kasatkina said, some players play better when they are a bit more sturdy(like Dasha)

No, the reverse. VJK needs to play way more top players, she has only played one other player ranked in the top 80 this year, and that was the then no 66 ranked Bronzetti, so this level of player is something totally new for the Andorran starlet. A real tennis lesson today about life with the big girls.

Unfortunately for VJK, Ostapenko just found her best tennis after the first couple of games after tortuous matches in the first two rounds so the Andorran did not have a chance.

Come on, she's 17, and she got her literally first win on tour in this tournament. Give her a break.
Also, the highest ranked player she ever met previously was Lucia Bronzetti. Do you think Lucia Bronzetti scares anyone?
Beacuse Ostapenko sure as hell does ;)

VJK was never going to win this match. The way to beat Ostapenko is by playing cleanly, containing her and waiting for the UEs, VJK did the exact opposite. She tried to play shot for shot and even matched Aljona in FH winners, but she also matched her in UEs.
What surprised me is how nervous VJK was at the start of the match, completely different than her match with Marino and much more like last week match against Peterson.

Could be true. Can be a good thing to get drubbed like that as it may serve as a wake up call or it could decimate ones belief.

She has to take it on the chin. The fact is that she has made her first WTA qf so that is a big step forward. She has moved out of her comfort zone to play a new level of player and that is what she has to do if she is going to make it out of the ITFs full-time. It's tough but she was never going to beat Ostapenko unless the Latvian dissolved into errors and dfs, it shows her the work she has to do to move up further.

Let's remember, she is only 186 in the world or so, so there is a long way to go before she can become a full-time WTA player.

She was also the 2nd player born 2003 or later to get in the top200, before all the Czechs, she simply had a bad season.

Penko!

Mixed emotions for the SF. Let鈥檚 see who wants my love more. :boxing:

VJK got righteously pwned today, but she鈥檚 had a solid tournament and is still an embryo with three more birthdays to go before we all completely write her off. :birthday:

Well she got injured in Mexico in February and that sort of stalled her progress and limited her clay season so she did well to pick up some momentum since then. She'd never qualified for a WTA MD before this week so making a qf is icing on the cake.

Bronzetti beat VJK 7-5 6-1 and Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2 6-2, so yes, she does scare 17-year old Juniors. She is not on Ostapenko level, but still higher than the Juniors. Ostapenko is MUCH higher. One of the best players in the world, capable of beating anything and anyone (Hi Halep, Swiatek).
