It is confirmed that monica has withdrawn from the USopen and wonders if she should play again or retire.........she also stated she is done for the season........

All the time away and she still haven't decided on the surgery. You figure she would have had the surgery and take the rest of the season off to heal..........now it seems that is more time needed.......anyway, get better soon Monica!!

I've posted this countless times... surgery is not a 100% quick fixall. The sesamoid bone is very tiny and surgery requires 5 screws placed into the bone. The sesamoid bone is very fragile and it's a risky surgery. If it didn't go as planned, she may never run again. Period.

And she, nor her agent, have commented on the remainder of 2003 season. It is unclear if she will come back this season or not. (I'm not saying I expect her to, but it's not been ruled out by Monica, herself.)

if the surgery could end her career why would she have it done? she's a pro tennis player and doesn't want to risk ending her career we should all understand that.

This decision affects her post-tennis life as well. I mean, if surgery doesn't fix the problem, and in fact breaks the sesamoid completely (#1 risk in this surgery), she will never be able to run properly again and will have continued foot problems in the rest of her life. It's a very scary and serious decision to try the surgery or not.

especially when you make a living by running balls down. i guess monica is probably also thinking about life after her tennis career comes to an end as it probably isn't to far off. think about it life for a former top sportsman when they can't even run. i agree it is a very scary decision and one i don't think the risk is worth taking.
