MONICA SELES

Did not understand the rules of tennis when she won her first tournament her first tournament at age 9. NATHALIE TAUZIAT

A cousin of French soccer captain Didier Deschamps, Tauziat was born in Bangui in Central Africa. Tauziat set up a tennis academy in Capbreton seven years ago.

Cool Lindsayfan. I kinda figured that people would know most of the stuff about their faves. Did any of the things surprise you about the other players?

I was surprised by some of the revelations. The Amelie Mauresmo and Conchita Martinez info was all new to me. Even my fave, Martina Hingis, whom I thought I knew heaps about, surprised me when the mag revealed that she really did want to pursue showjumping after her career was over. It had just been a natural assumption before reading that. The Anna Kournikova stuff was probably the most widely known fact printed by the magazine. It was the only thing that was remotely interesting about her. It also mentioned how she had never won a title. Pretty boring and well-documented information, IMHO.

Actually, I have to admit that one of Jennifer's preferred 'things' did make me laugh, or is it just my mind working on another level???

I didn't know Anke was seeing Josh Eagle. There was a rumour going round earlier this year on the other messageboard, but Anke still insists she's single!<br />Hmmm....gossip or fact?!

Lindsayfan: Agreed. Hmm, I hope her liking of Tomba isn't too indicative of Martina's own attitude. I would be very disappointed.

Rasputin: I had a feeling the magazine was wrong about Sandrine's place of birth. Damned reporters!

Angelica: I will post Marat's little bit, plus some of the more interesting stuff about the other male players. But because you requested first, I'll start with Marat...

MARAT SAFIN

A devotee of the Mike Oldfield band, Safin is allergic to wine and is a sucker for buying watches, having admitted to an obsession with time pieces. His father Mikhail was a track and field champion - particularly 100m - in Moscow. His mother Rausa contested the French and Wimbledon juniors.

GUSTAVO KUERTEN

Despite winning 3 French Open titles, Guga regards Brazil's 1992 Olympic Games gold medal in volleyball as his most thrilling sporting moment. Loves surfing off Biarritz and listening to Bob Marley.

ANDRE AGASSI

Rarely showers in the locker-room, preferring to return to the hotel to refresh. Despite shedding kilos after slumping to 140th in the world, still loves his hamburgers.

LLEYTON HEWITT

Changed his nickname and part of his email address to Rusty after his coach Darren Cahill dubbed the Hewitt family the Griswalds in reference to Chevy Chase's dysfunctional, fictional clan.

PATRICK RAFTER

Bought his first car in 1997 - a '91 Mitsubishi Pajero for $12,000. Prefers to ride scooters around his adopted Bermuda where he slakes his thirst with Dark and Stormy's, an Atlantic concoction which has since found favour on the Australian Davis Cup team.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO

Almost quit tennis four years ago when his mother died from breast cancer. When Ferrero won Mallorca in 1999, he blew a kiss heavenwards in honour of his mother.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV

A golf fanatic, loves gambling on the golf course with Andrei Medvedev, Tim Henman, and Henman's fitness trainer, Kieren Vorster. Also punts on backgammon with Vorster. Studying to secure his pilot's license. (aside: Kafelnikov recently donated his entire paycheck for winning Moscow to the relief fund for the Black Sea disaster.)

PETE SAMPRAS

Slowly learning the art of kicking an Australian football with his fitness coach and former Fitzroy defender Brett Stephens.

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN

Nicknamed Big John, Grosjean loves the Counting Crows and drives a Jeep Cherokee. Spends a lot of time in Florida.

TIM HENMAN

Barracks for Oxford United and regards The Shawshank Redemption as his all-time favourite movie.

ROGER FEDERER

His perfect day would comprise of plenty of video and television watching. While Federer likes nothing more than to dine out on gnocchi gorgonzola, he always finds the time to watch Good Will Hunting and the less cerebral World Wrestling Federation.

ALEX CORRETJA

Owns more than 500 sports car magazines and is a self-confessed car expert with an encyclopaedic knowledge. Favourite dish is monchetas, a bean dish accompanied by sausage, char-grilled meat, chicken and toasted tomato.

GORAN IVANISEVIC

Blessed with tremendous hand-eye coordination, Goran is one of the worst golfers on the circuit with a shocking swing. Is still investigating the possibility of a second sporting career - soccer - after he retires from tennis. (aside, Goran was seeking to play with the Melbourne Knights soccer team as part of a training warmup prior to the Australian Open in January.) (aside #2, was named after his mother, Gorana.)

ARNAUD CLEMENT

Australia is one of his most cherished destinations, but the nuggety Frenchman has a fetish for Lebanese food - a genetic leaning since his grandmother was born there.

ANDY RODDICK

Was accidentally discovered by Tarik Benhabiles when the Frenchman was sheltering under a courtside canopy and started a conversation with the lady standing next to him. It was Roddick's mother.

TOMMY HAAS

Tommy's father was the European judo champion. Haas loves cars and has an extensive collection of automobile magazines. Follows Bayern Munich.

THOMAS JOHANSSON

Carries the nickname Toker, which means "crazy" in Swedish. A pop music victim, Johansson rates visiting a Depeche Mode concert as the best day of his life.

JAN-MICHAEL GAMBILL

Dubbed "Hollywood" by Jim Courier. Follows Utah Jazz. Sponsors a charity called Cat Tails, which aims to protect some of nature's big cats. Second fave sport is beach volleyball, hence the American's frequent visits to Honolulu.

CARLOS MOYA

Owns two dogs, a labrador named Lucas and a Great Dane named Goran, in honour of his mother's affection for Goran Ivanisevic. Inspired by US basketballer Karl Malone to excel at international level. Moya loves watching Silence of the Lambs.

GUILLERMO CANAS

Nicknamed Willy. Rates Argentina's controversial 1986 World Cup soccer victory in Mexico as his top sporting moment. Reveres disgraced footballer Maradona.

FABRICE SANTORO

Considered retiring in 1996, and branching in to acting. Met his Brazilian fiance when she was dancing onstange at a pop concert. Collects racquets to eventually start a tennis museum when he retires.

NICOLAS ESCUDE

His perfect day would be sunshine, two metre waves and a day at the beach with his wife Axelle. Addicted to the Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson.

ALBERT PORTAS

Known in Spain as El Drago de las Dejados, which translates to the Let Dragon, a reference to the baseliner's habit for constantly finding the net cord. Idolises Carl Lewis and the work of Agatha Christie. Has seen Titanic on several occasions.

ANDREI PAVEL

One of the happiest, most outgoing players on the tour, Pavel often paints smiling faces on his racquet. A devotee of Michael Jordan and compatriots Hagi and Nastase. Has lived in Germany for the past eight years but eventually wants to take a three-month holiday in Australia and New Zealand.

GREG RUSEDSKI

Known to his detractors as Grinning Greg. Is referred to as The Joker by his peers because of his "smiley personality." Strings his racquets at a loose 47lbs in deference to John McEnroe, drives a Jaguar XK8 and likes listening to Jamiroquai and Lenny Kravitz in the company of his cats, Henry and Arthur.

Snuffkin: Did you mean the references to the jewellery? LOL. I guess the writer's were either being tongue-in-cheek or were completely oblivious.

Amelie's info. is fairly old. I don't believe she has Nelson anymore (much to Sonja's chagrin). She now has a dog (golden retriever).

Braveheart - I think you understand what I was getting at. Good to know I wasn't the only one to see it. With the ahem, 'reputation' she has, it wasn't difficult to let the mind wander.
