Maria Kirilenko def. Urszula Radwanska 6-1,7-6(3)

RUS I leads POL 1-0

Maria played a great match. Urszula was always lingering around in the match, but when it came to, Maria would always have a winner.

Angelika Roesch def. Nicole Thyssen 0-6,6-2,6-0

GER and NED are tied 1-1

Nicole played great through the first set and sort of stuck around in the second, but Angelika stole the momentum away from her and just destroyed her. Nicole was really out of it in the later stages of the match.

Serena Williams def. Chanda Rubin 7-6(5),6-4

USA I leads USA II 2-0

Serena was always just a little bit better than Chanda. USA II is in a tough position going down 0-2 after the first day, they're going to have to really pick it up tomorrow.

Anastasia Pivovarova def. Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0,0-6,6-2

RUS I leads POL 2-0

Crazy match between these two. Anastasia gives Russia a 2-0 lead. Poland finds themselves struggling and puts their hopes on doubles, which they lost against Italy.

Jo Durie def. Melinda Czink 6-3,3-6,6-3

GBR II leads HUN 2-0

Britain gets a good lead over the Hungarians, A real high quality match, but Durie's claycourt abilities kept her going in the match.

Kerber/Kloesel def. Krajicek/Schultz-McCarthy 5-7,7-6(5),7-6(2)

GER leads NED 2-1

A great match, gives Germany a lead in the tie. Mechaella and Brenda couldn't close it out in the second set and they had their chances. The Germans were again more mentally prepared for the tiebreak then in the third set.

Dementieva/Poutchkova def. Domachowska/Korzeniak 4-6,7-5,7-6(5)

RUS I def. POL 3-0

Poland has put up some great fights against the Russians, but they were too solid. The Poles weren't able to win either of their doubles ties, and then the advantage went in singles to Russia with two claycourters. Elena and Olga really had the guts in this match to close it out in the end, something they excell in.

Croft/Wade def. Kapros/Mandula 6-4,2-6,6-4

GBR II def. HUN 3-0

Great Britain II seals its spot in the semis too. All the Hungarians have played great and the 0-3 hole doesn't give them enough credit. Britain has been solid so far and look real tough.

Davenport/V.Williams def. Craybas/Raymond 0-6,6-1,6-3

USA I def. USA II 3-0

Three teams have easily advanced to the Semis. USA II plays fairly erratic and the Americans of USA I took advantage of that in the tie.

(sorry I have really no other pic of Sue)

Anastasia Pivovarova def. Urzula Radwanska 6-0,0-6,7-5

Ashley Harkleroad def. Jill Craybas 0-6,6-0,6-0

Sue Barker def. Aniko Kapros 2-6,6-3,6-3

RUS I leads POL 4-0
USA I leads USA II 4-0
GBR II leads HUN 4-0

A great match and two flip-floppy ones, all in dead ties. The three teams that are down 0-4 really want to avoid WIFCT's first whitewash.

Martina Muller def. Nicole Thyssen 0-6,6-1,6-0

GER def. NED 3-1

Germany takes out the Netherlands, Nicole was a bit dissappointing for the Dutch team in this tie. Martina really got things going after the first set, not letting Nicole get anything. Nicole didn't play bad just bad against the Germans.

Jennifer Capriati def. Serena Williams 6-0,6-4

FINAL RESULT
USA I def. USA II 4-1

Jennifer saves team USA II from a horrible 5-0 defeat. When Jennifer can get out to a quick start she plays fairley well, but she wares down easily after that.

Elise Tamaela def. Angelika Roesch 6-3,0-6,6-2

FINAL RESULT
GER def. NED 3-2

Elise plays great despite the Dutch losing. She'll have a good individual ranking next week. If they can improve their doubles game the Dutch will be real strong with Elise.

Maria Kirilenko def. Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0,7-5

FINAL RESULT

GBR II def. HUN 5-0

RUS I def. POL 5-0

Both Britain and Russia played phenomenol ties. They got up quickly in these final matches and the losing nations made it interesting. But Jo and Maria were able to complete the destruction of the other teams.
