Serena's playing someone who can run with her.
Justine's playing someone who can run with her.

Serena's playing someone who can hit with her.
Justine's playing someone who can hit with her.

So each loses 2 elements that are usually an advantage for them.

The differentiator? Serena's serve.

Williams 7-6(7-2) 6-2

That's a rather interesting way to put it

And I tend to agree, Justine's 1st serve percentage has never been great, so I think that if all goes well, Serena would win!!

There's running well then there's running well when playing the power of a Lindsay Serena Monica or Venus. I actually think Serena has a movement hitting and maybe not so much service advantage. Justine has pace placement and percentage...Serena has pace and placement percentage can be iffy.

But as Justine says...they'll play we'll see.

Well, we can throw out what happened in the opening rounds. As much as I admire her, Silvia Farina Elia is not world-beating material. And Anke had opportunities (though not enough) but shot herself in the foot.

My assessment...

Serena's Goods:
The Serve, Power, Court Coverage, Height (duh!)

Justine's Goods:
Variety, Shot Placement

Serena's Big Liability:
Tendency to overhit/go for too much

Justine's Big Liability:
First serve percentage

The one factor that makes me antsy:
Mental Strength
Both of these players have lost big matches that they should have won. Both showed this heart-breaking ability to not close out when the finish line was in sight (both at the AO, Henin at the French and Serena at Wimby). I like to think they've gotten over it...but you never know. If one of them chokes I will...oh, I don't even want to think about it.

I think everyone knows that I'm generally biased towards Henin (it's a height thing) but a part of me also goes to Serena (my big sis beat me a lot). If Henin wins it shows that she can play against power hitters indoors. I'd actually rather see Serena get enough points to not be seeded so low at next year's Australian Open...and Henin can go off and play with clay in prep for Fed Cup. (My blood will boil if they have to meet in the 4th Round of a slam again! Too damn early for either of them to go down!)

I hope this match is higher quality than their last one. Their only match was toilet-bowl quality in the beginning and then only Serena seemed to be "playing" in the second set.

You've got to like either player's chances against the winner of Testud/Capriati. I think that the winner of this one will be the finalist...but you never know.

Very good analysis in these posts. I agree, if Serena serves well she should win. After reading Henin's interview, it appeared to me she was admitting having nerves in their first match at the Open. She was trying imo too hard to convince that she is over that. Her getting bageled will only increase the pressure in Friday's match. Serena is just playing too well right now and will defeat Justine in straight sets.

I guess some types of logic just fly over people's head. There's always a secondary motive to certain long-term bumps. It wasn't intended to be taken seriously anyway, maybe you need to take a break if you snap so easily.

I also don't see nothing wrong with digging up old threads. I find it very interesting to see that Serena made a lot of progress in two years. ;)
