"Sachia Vickery, in the company of her Manager Dominique Mitchell, Fitness Coach Christopher Howard, mother Paula Liverpool and other relatives, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Norton, signalling her intentions to represent Guyana at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Vickery, 22, recently made known her desire to compete for Guyana at the Olympics. She is one of the fastest racing players on the WTA circuit, and is currently ranked 105 in the world, her highest ranking ever."

Because she'll probably never be a top 4 American with too many young girls who are more talented than her rising up as well

What ever happened to just getting better and not all this switching nationalities malarky?

She'd still have to get one of those spots reserved for smaller countries because I don't see her ranking ever being good enough

This.

It's also incredibly unfair that the likes of Vickery and Gavrilova can switch nationalities while Tomljanovic can't because Croatia had no depth and she had to play Fed Cup in her early years.

Does she have any actual family links to Guyana?

I really don't see what the big deal is. It's evident she's not doing it for a millionaire contract like those players representing Kazakhstan. Many sportspeople aspire to competing in the Olympics as the ultimate goal in their career and this is her chance to do it. I say let her take it.

That's your typical outfit when you pay an official visit to the Minister of Social Cohesion of the country you want to represent...

What were mother and daughter thinking? :sobbing:

Well, good luck to her.

But for a player without a top ranking, who could really benefit from wildcards into good events, it seems a bit like shooting herself in the foot.

I agree. Not that Tomljanovic's tennis has menat she would have represented her new country ;)

Seriously IMO teenage representation should not determine final national outcome. As much as I dislike nationality switching it's when adults do it as opposed to children. Though I did dislike Tennis Australia's policy of basically trying to buy talented youth already most of the way to a decent career.

At the opposite end when our country has provided lots of support for your career, it seems mean spirited to cast them aside because you aren't good enough to attend an Olympics. Though I think the Olympic tennis should be a 2 week 128 draw thing. But then who wouldn't want to go to an Olympics? By all accounts an amazing experience.

I feel it's the opposite...having benefited already from a bunch of WCs when she was ranked in the 100s and 200s, this is when she can now switch allegiance - when she doesn't need them so much. I don't think it's any coincidence that this is happening when she's on the verge of the top 100 (and her points distribution makes it extremely likely that she'll get there imminently and have direct entry into Slam MDs this year).

She doesn't need the US for WC opportunities so much any more but she does need Guyana for Olympic opportunities. So, now's the time.

TBH I certainly welcome seeing Guyanese representation on tour!
Slams, yes, but she is on the cusp, and could easily drop out. Progress is rarely linear.

But slams are not the only WCs available to US players. She won't get direct entry to the larger WTA events in the states on her current ranking.

If things go well for her, and she does storm up the top 100, then fine, but she is discarding a safety net, if she hits any problems.

It's a bit of a gamble. It's quite new to tennis, this Olympic dream. Nobody used to give a tinker's cuss.

:haha:

looks like a porn intro
Her mum told in an interview she used to "bartend" at a strip club and said proudly she made $2,500 in tips over three days for Memorial Day and that was difficult to quit. Or that NYT interview where she literally said:
“She would ask why she had to take the Greyhound bus,” Liverpool said. “I told her, ‘All the other kids are going to get there in their planes and their Lamborghinis, and you are going to kill them all.’

Bless her
