Anna Kournikova def. (1)Dinara Safina 6-3 6-2
A pathetic display from the top seed, she has struggled to win a match since she won Sydney earlier in the season. Taking nothing away from Anna though who played fanstastic tennis and will be a dangerous opponent later in the tournament, she will take a lot of confidence from this beatdown and look to bult on it.
(5)Gisela Dulko def. Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 7-5
Dulko's experience gets her through this match. The young pole fought hard but her experienced opponent was too strong when it came down to it. Gisela will have a tough match next round against an in form Kournikova, it should be a great match. Good tournament from Agnieszka!
(4)Serena Williams def. Jennifer Capriati 6-4 5-7 6-3
In some ways this can be seen as an upset as Capriati has been in top form the whole of this season. Could be a sign that Serena is returning to her best tennis? This was always going to be a great match and the girls didn't disapoint, some huge hitting from the base line and lots of amazing rallies. In the end however Serens refused to be denied.
Karolina Sprem def. (8)Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-3
There are so many upsets this round! With two Russians crashing out to much lower ranked players. Kirilenko might have been hoping to earn some big points on her favourite surface but Sprem proves too good. All the top seeds are going to have to start watching their back because the lower ranked players are playing really well.
(7)Betina Jozami def. Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-3
Great win from Betina here. She survives the round of upsets playing amazing tennis. Sam Stosur's game really doesn't work well on clay as Jozami was able to return her big serve with ease. In this sort of form Jozami might be one of the favourites for the title - if she manages to keep it up.
(3)Daniela Hantuchova def. Vera Zvonareva 6-7 6-3 7-5
Tough match from the former world #2 and for once she shows some mental strength to battle through. However she will have to raise her game next round is she is to beat Jozami. Will Daniela's tactic to drop down to the lower tier of events to try to find her form again with work or not?
(6)Christina McHale def. Alona Bondarenko 6-4 3-6 6-4
The Americans are finding their form again after a miserable start to the season. If this keeps up they will have a good chance to defend their Fed Cup title this year. Christina lives up to her seeding and fights hard to beat an in form Bondarenko. The matches her ein Monterrey have been much more one sided than in Acapulco
(2)Melanie Oudin def. Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-1 6-4
Another american coming out of a slump. She played her best tennis today, with some down the line backhands. Larcher de Brito should take every opportunity to learn and develop as a player and she could be a major threat in the future. Oudin vs. McHale will be a facinating match.
So one of the most missed games on the board is back!
For the summer atleast!
