YEC Champion, Sharapova Arrives Down Under

Perth, Australia - Maria Sharapova won the EWTA's first Year Ending Championship just last month and has accepted an invitation to the prestigious Hopman Cup event held in the beautiful city of Perth in Australia. She will represent her home country Russia partnering Dmitry Tursunov. Russia is seeded second despite Sharapova being the top player to play. They are in the second group and will open up the tournament against the Slovak Republic pairing of Daniela Hantuchova and Dominik Hrbaty. Fourth seeds Japan and Denmark rounds out the group.

Sharapova arrives at the hotel she will be staying in Perth

Sharapova arrived today, 1 week before the event starts to get used to the courts. This will be the first event in Maria Sharapova's schedule and is looking forward to her first Australian Open as she missed out last year's first grandslam with an ankle injury. Maria Sharapova had a successful season, ending the year as the number 3 player, despite only winning 2 titles. One in Charleston and the other the big Year Ending Championship.

Luckily we caught up to Maria and got a one-on-one interview with her.

Sharapova getting interviewed

First of all congratulations on your YEC win
Thank you

It was a good win, especially you know, with the top players there.
Yeah, it was. I mean, I came in without any expectations. I just went in there for the last event of the year and I was just going to give it my best. And give it my best was what I did.

You certainly was at your best, your best of the whole season you think?
Ohh I don't know about that. I mean, at Charleston I had a pretty good run. You know, beating top players also. I didn't drop a set at Charleston and dropped a few in Doha. But I don't know, you know. I have improved my game a lot, so I am a more improved player. And I think other players have improved as well. So yes, I think it was my best form of the year.

So, coming into the Hopman Cup in your best form, do you feel confident?
Yeah, I have a lot of confidence. This event is going to be so much fun and I'm not going to put pressure on myself, you know. I mean I will do my best, especially in the doubles with Dmitry, I don't want to let him down. I think the most fun is going to be the doubles.

Did you see the trophies yet? You were practicing on the court and you should've walked past it on the way.
Oh yes.. the diamond encrusted balls. They look sooooo good. I was just going to break the glass and take it. They are so beautiful. *laughter*

Is that going to be a motivation for you?
What is?

The trophies.
Oh yeah.. definitely. Who wouldn't want one of those in their bedroom, you know. *laughter*. Yes I think displaying those beautiful tennis balls will motivate a lot of the players. I JUST WANT THEM SO BADLY!

Being the top player in the event, does it put more pressure on you?
No, I just like to think about what's going on the court. I don't care if I'm 1 or 60 and it doesn't matter if my opponent is 1 or 60, if I play my best, I know that I can win against anyone.

It's been nice talking to you. We'll catch up next time.
Yeah sure. Thanks guys.

Wozniacki prepares for Season 2

Perth, AUS The EWTA tennis circuit was a succes in it first season and the second is about to start. With all the players willing to success. Danish teenage player Caroline Wozniacki prepared her season 2 in Australia along with her friend Maria Kirilenko and their coach. She starts the season confindently in Hopman Cup represanting Denmark with Kirstian Pless. We talk with her.

Hello, Caroline you said you had a hard preparation to this season 2. Can you tell us how it was?

I, Maria and our coach went to Australia to prepare for Season2. We trained in the last month and I focused on improving my volley skills and my groundstrokes. I think my service and footwork is nice but I still have to improve on my volley skills. I am very tired but I think now I can be able to play 3 hours matches. (laughs) And here I will have to play 2 mathes for day and think I am prepared to that. After all that month was really necessary and I think it will pay-off.

Why you went to Australia?

Ohhhhhhh.... My coach decided to go there because he really loves Australia and we wanted to get used to the weather conditions and the environment. I also like Australia alot and Perth is a very beatiful city. We had time to travel here and it has soe nice beaches and adorable places.

What do you think about your Season 1?

It was a great debut season and reached two Semis and one Final in small tournaments. And I played very nice in the US Open. I just started in Montreal and it was very nice there. And all those tournaments were I travelled with Maria were very nice. I enjoyed a lot Season 1 but I want to do even better this season.

Looking up to Season 2 what do you think is your best weapon?

I think I am a very consistent player. My service is nice, I can put the ball fast and colocated and I rarely make Doubles faults. My groundstrokes are also nice. But I think my best weapon is the consistency of groundstrokes and y fitness and endurance. I improved a lot in tha since the first moment I started playing here.

And the worst weapon?

Hummmmmm...... The volley skills I still have to improve a lot in the netgame and Hopman Cup is faboulus for that because we are playing mixed doubles macthes. And also against top players I am too nervous and I cn't finish the matches. Maybe because I am young and I am unexperienced but I have to improve on my mental skills.

And now talking about goals, what are your goals to this season?

I have lost of goals to this season. I think is to do the best possible. (laughs) Smart aswer (laughs) Seriously, I want to win my first tournament this season after reaching a final last season losing to Maria. I also want to do better in the bigger tournaments. My goal for the slams is to reach third round. And about rankings my goal is to finish the year in the top 20. High goals but with hard work I can get tham.

And what about doubles, are you going to continue playing?

Yes I really like doubles and I think it's really fun to play with someone else in the same side of the court (lol) I don't know if Vera (Zvonareva) want to keep playing with me but I think we have some chances in the big tourneys and on small tourneys too.
