We caught up with Sabine Lisicki after her final practice session for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship which starts today.
You missed the season opener in Kuala Lumpur due to injury? Have you recovered from that completely now?
I had a bad abdominal strain which took longer than expected to recover from unfortunately, I couldn't hit any balls until a few days before, so I just wasn't ready in time for KL.
It's fine now, I lost some fitness and touch from being out, but I've been working hard since I returned to get back to my best.
You've lost early in the last few tournaments, can we expect a better result here?
I'm hoping so! (laughs). I'm happy with my practice and my form has been improving, I just need more matches.
One thing that has been going very well for you is in doubles. How did your partnership with Andrea Petkovic come about?
Quite by accident and at the very last minute (laughs). We were both determined to concentrate on singles this season, after both our injury interrupted previous seasons.
Andrea started so well by winning KL, me not so well being out injured and just before the deadline for entry's at Sydney she asked about someone to play doubles with her.
Of course I offered and she accepted, we entered and left thinking about it all until later!
Recently you won the Australian Open doubles title and followed up with another win at the next event at Johanessburg. How does that make you feel, finally having a AO winners trophy?
It was just unbelievable and completely unexpected. To share it with a good friend like Andrea made it extra special. I still sometimes think I'm going to wake up and it'll all have been a dream (laughs)
Well, best of luck in Dubai and for the rest of the season, and thanks for the interview.
Thank you, and you're most welcome. See ya (smiles and waves)
