Russia to host Fed Cup Finals
The International Tennis Federation today announced that the Russian Tennis Federation has been awarded the right to host the Semifinals and Final of the 2003 Fed Cup World Group competition.

The Russian bid has been accepted subject to the signing of a promoter agreement.

The Fed Cup Finals, to be held the week commencing 17 November 2003, will be played at the 12,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Moscow. Matches will be played indoors and the chosen court surface is carpet (Taraflex).

“As the largest annual team competition in women’s international sport the Fed Cup is a real showcase event for the ITF. Moscow has a proven track record in hosting major tennis events, including the very successful Davis Cup Final in 1995 and the annual Kremlin Cup tournament, and we are confident that this year’s Fed Cup Finals in Moscow will be a great event,” ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said.

Announcing the decision, ITF Executive Vice President and Fed Cup Director Juan Margets said: “The Fed Cup Committee considered applications from both Belgium and Russia to host the Fed Cup Finals and voted unanimously to accept the bid from the Russian Federation. The bid met all of our requirements and the ITF is looking forward to taking this showcase event to Moscow.”

The ITF’s Fed Cup Committee is chaired by Judy Levering (BoD, USA) and comprises Pierre-Paul de Keghel (BEL), Ann Jones (GBR), Aleksei Selivanenko (RUS) and Georg von Waldenfels (BoD, GER). The representatives from Russia and Belgium abstained from the vote.

Belgium, France, Russia and the United States have all qualified for the 2003 Fed Cup World Group Semifinals. Belgium and the United States will contest one semifinal, with Russia taking on France in the other. The two winners will meet in the final, played at the same venue in the same week. The semifinals and final will be the the best of five matches: four singles and one doubles. Each match will be the best of three sets. Details of the schedule of matches will be released in due course.

Were you planning on attending Fed Cup?? That's a bummer, huh?? I wish it was in Belgium too, so if the WS play everyone in Belgium could see them annihilate the Belgian squad 5-0.

Of course it will be carpet. The clay would be picked to counteract Americans. But no need now, sisters are unlikely to come, Davenport won't play, and Capriati is not really good indoors. So the surface was picked to neutralise Belgians.

Russia gave more money, that's the only reason why Russia is chosen. I mean, the Belgian team was planning to send the future #1 and #2 in worldstennis!

Fed Cup isn't until after the YEC so the WS could be there just to play some matches between the YEC and Australia. You know Venus likes to get pointers from BJK.

And that could also be a background reason for choosing Russia. Given the Henin-Serena story, and given that Belgium would almost certainly picked clay, it would guarantee a low key US presentation. And that's something no one needs. Being played on carpet is likelier to get Top US Players. Out of two countries, Russia was likelier to get a better American team.

I think Venus and Serena would have relished the opportunity to play the Belgians in Belgium on the clay. Especially Juju.
