As Russian Fed Cup captain Tarpishev said, the situation about determining the hosts of the finals is now about money. As he says , if any other factors would be equal, Russia would have gotten it for sure. But at this point Russia can not match the American offer of $2M. Russia can only offer $500K for that.

He also said that Marat Safin _is_ preparing to US Open.. :bounce:

The biggest piece of the pie, I guess, is US Tv rights. If it is noy in USA, it will not be really watched in US and that piece is basically void , and the price of TV rights in Belgium or Russia is really peanuts, especially taken into account that if it is played in Europe, American big players are unlikely to play.

I am OK with that being in US, as long as it is East Coast.

That's sad about Russia not being able to host the Fed Cup Finals. But maybe some of their wealthy tennis players could chip in and help come up with the money. But it probabaly wouldn't matter because the ITF would rather have the Fed Cup Finals in America.

As for Safin. I hope he is finally healthy. But he's like the boy who cried Wolf when it comes to his comebacks and his once immense potential.

Well for all the bitching and moaning about the united states we at least get things done and can afford to get them done.

I can't believe a country with all those tennis players in the top one hundred cannot host a freaking fed cup semi!

Isn't tennis supposed to be one of the premier sports in europe? Shouldn't you all be falling over to host these events? Tennis is like a tier two sport here and we still get things done even if not a lot of people show up: bank of the west.

This is interesting.

This is why I find it interesting that so many people hate the presence of Venus and Serena. They bring money to the sport and television revenue.

I'm convinced the Russians and Belgians would fill up the stands much more than the Americans. Like ys said, it's not about popularity or support, but about money!

You can't expect to get the same money from TV rights from a country with 10 million people as one of 280 million. And it's not the fault of the Russians or the Belgians that Americans are only interested in Americans.

doesnt matter how many players we got in top 100, our Federation is not wealthy.
and Tennis is just a real minority sport although picking up in last few years.

Are we talking about $1.5 million?
Kournikova could write that check and not feel it.

in some parts it is but not over here, its a pretty new sport, and only starting to get more players since tennis got back into Olympics
its still only played by under 2% of the population (about 30,000) from last figures

Spain, France and west Europe its popular (except GB)

In the USA, that's true. But Russians do have some way to get money and interest and compensate for being not a wealthy nation. Tarpishev knows what he has to do - select Kournikova.

perhaps someone can get Roman Abramovich to handover $2m, he seems to be throwing money left, right and center for football players

$60m he's spent in under 3 weeks
thats only small change of his $4 billion fortune

I think she should... She claims she is a tennis player before anything else-well now is the time to put up or shut up..Oh well, this is just my not so humble opinion.

No matter how much money Kournikova earns, it is not a player's duty/place to come up with the money to host a FEDCUP final.
