Venus somehow still had a positive winner/unforced error ratio, but she was such a passenger in this match. :hysteric: I can’t with her competing with her body in this condition…. can she get a WC into the wheelchair doubles at RG?

Good for Jo to beat 2 slam winners in one day (her birthday!), but it’s hard to assess her level playing against a cripple. Still, with this victory she’s now officially won more clay matches this year than in her entire career previously. Good BHDTL today.

Jo :bigcry: FINALLY gets her first QF in Rome and first Premier 5 or above QF since Cincy 2017, what a solid performance today :cheer:

Oh Vee  she just had no chance today once it became clear she couldn't move or serve properly. She gave it a good go in the second after warming up but for the most part, Jo was moving the ball around too well for Vee to compete properly. Hopefully these nagging injuries she constantly has at the moment will start to improve at some point.

As for Konta, it's a second ever clay QF and first in a big event. Fantastic effort to win 2 matches in one day with only a 3 hour rest in between, thankfully for her this one wasn't anywhere near as physical as the Stephens match this morning. Gets Vondrousova or Kasatkina in the quarters, which is a big opportunity for her after a good 18 months of not going deep in these events. Good rest needed tonight for Jo, but all being well she should have enough energy for that one tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Sidenote - that's 8 wins on clay this year for Konta, she only had 7 before in her entire CAREER :hysteric: I can't at clay reviving her career after a dismal 20 months.

Jo  Finally a good result in a tournament for her, and on clay, no less!. QF in Premier tournament has to be counted as such already considering her struggles (including a prolonged losing streak) when you would think she's a sure bet for YEC after that very successful period.

Venus' serving is too much of a handicap, she's not doing any damage with it anymore but serves even more sitters for her opponents instead  Her groundstrokes are still there, but it's not enough to beat strong opponents on their good days.

Konta's birthday is tomorrow ;). But she has a very solid opportunity to reach the semifinals now :)bolt:) so it would be nice to see her get a win on the real day, and either way today is a nice early present. What a result for her :bigclap:. I have felt that Konta has been playing much better than her ranking for much of the last year, but especially after that Muguruza match at the Australian Open I figured it was only a matter of time until she at least had some decent results. Never expected it to happen on clay though!

Venus . I really don't understand what the point is in showing up here when she's crippled and has sucked on clay for years but I guess I respect her for trying.

I think she can get away without a serve(/elbow) as long as she's placing it well (she did beat Kvitova in IW and go to the second week both there and in Miami), today the placement wasn't terrific and Konta smartly took advantage.

But i'm concerned about the knee injury. If the ball isn't coming directly into her strike zone she's not even walking towards it. Not changing the direction of her body whatsoever. It actually looked like she was stuck in the mud at certain points today. :hysteric: If her knee was stronger she'd probably be serving bigger again as well.

Venus was struggling with movement but her groundstrokes were still vicious at times.
She's still one of the scariest ball strikers out there and when you combine that with her comfort at the net it's easy to understand why she's still a handful for players a decade younger than herself.
She really needs to heal though, so that she can play at her best.

Konta is having a surprisingly decent clay season out of nowhere.
I think it's Vondrousova or Kasatkina up next for her in Rome.
I'd expect Marketa to get past an out of form Daria an would expect her to be a handful for Jo.

LOL I am deceased. Too funny. It's hard because on one hand, I totally respect her willpower and fight, which is truly unparalleled on the tour. Nobody fights as hard as she does. But this match really reminded me of the Halep match in Miami - like even if by a miracle she won the second set, how on earth could she expect to win the third? And then even if she won this match, what is going to happen in the QF? I mean Vee already had a longer break than everyone else due to Serena WD. I love her, but if she's injured, it just is not gonna happen....

IIRC there were some matches or a match :tears: this year where her serving was pretty good, I think it was in Miami. Sure not Peak Venus but those very ... serviceable service displays. :)
