Women's Look Forward: Paris

We move into the second Slam of the year, and changes have occured at the top of the game. One year ago, Elena Dementieva had just burst on to the scene and, despite being unseeded, was the heavy favorite for the title in Paris. And she won the title. Now, she's struggling to win matches, and even show up healthy.

Venus Williams as well hasn't played all year, and yet she's still #5 in the world!

This year, Daniela Hantuchova, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles enter as the favorites.

The Draw
We'll skip to the 16's since there are only two 32 matches.

Daniela Hantuchova is the top seed. She faces the winner of Nicole Pratt/Alicia Molik in the 16's. Pratt just reached the quarters in Rome, while Molik has shown she doesn't like the dirt. Still, Molik should get through. Molik beat Hantuchova for the finals in Canberra. Molik could test Hantuchova, but Dani should get through to the quarters. Hantuchova has, by far, the toughest draw though.

Chanda Rubin faces Kim Clijsters (7) in a Berlin final rematch in the 16's. Clijsters won the Berlin final easily, and should beat Rubin again. The Clijsters-Hantuchova quarter is very interesting. Clijsters is her best on clay, and should she play the game right, she has a shot at the semis.

Monica Seles is seeded 6, but probably should be seeded #3. She opens against Magdalena Grzybowska. That's a tough 16 round. Maggie is very consistent, but lately she hasn't been able to close out matches. Monica has.

Jelena Dokic takes on defending champ, and #4 seed Elena Dementieva in the last 16 on this half of the draw. Despite losing some close matches this clay season, Dokic has really impressed. She is thin close. And with Dementieva's injuries (physical and mental), this is a great shot for Jelena.

Anna Kournikova is the #3 seed, and she is struggling. She opens in the 16's against Anabel Medina Garrigues, who made the semis in Berlin. Anabel is very dangerous, and if Anna isn't carful, it'll be an early exit for her.

Jennifer Capriati takes on #5 seed Venus Williams. Again, Venus hasn't played all year...and Jennifer is fastly climbing the ranks. Jennifer could win based on her "experience"--and Venus is the US Open champ!

Ashley Harkleroad is #8 seed, and looking for her third straight Slam semi final. She opens against Tamarine Tanasugarn, who made the US Open semis. Tanasugarn hasn't looked the same since winning Linz though.

The last 16 is with Martina Hingis, the #2 seed vs. the 32 winner of Lindsay Davenport/Serena Williams. Davenport hasn't won a match yet, and Serena has looked very good in her two matches. Serena is the favorite...and if she takes her chances has a shot at Hingis.

TennisILove09's Predictions
Semis
Hantuchova vs. Seles
Capriati vs. Hingis

Finals
Hantuchova vs. Hingis

Winner
Hingis

Rankings
We are in a time where anything can happen. Hingis could become #1. Hantuchova's chances are better at keeping #1. Kournikova-Venus-Seles could be #3. Dementieva's falling. Only if she defends will she hold on to her ranking...but moving up doesn't seem too likely.

Below that, Seles should pass Venus...and maybe Anna for her career high. Below that, Capriati is making quick work of the ranks. In 5 events played, she's in the top 10.

Dani controlled the match from start to finish. I wish Pratt would come up with some new game plan. Dani into the quarters--and hasn't lost a Slam match this year.

A stunning result. Last week's runner up was completely dominated by Grzybowska. Monica failed to change her game style last week (and why would she?), but Maggie just out played her.
