most ridiculous point i've ever seen in one of anna's matches....this one was in anna and martina's semi-final match at chase last year
. anna had just lost the first set and was a little destroyed after that. ue's just crept into her game and she lost the tiebreak spraying forehands in the last two points
........
early in the second set anna was having trouble with her confidence
. she was down 0-15 first game of the set was on her serve. second serve, martina came in to the net with a deep forehand approach. it was pretty long, anna hit it back as a sort of a mini-lob then martina made a volley. it did look out and anna after hitting back that weak ball immediately looked at the umpire and made the gesture with her fingers how long it was. she DIDN'T see the volley martina made. it was a more than foot wide... literally. the volley was so horrible everyone was speechless but anna was so concentrated on the approach shot she didn't notice the linesperson on the other side was pointing out for martina's supposedly volley winner
. i didn't hear her say "OUT" however so anna had no clue, perhaps she didn't really say it. but she kept her hand pointed out for a good number of seconds. as anna was making the gesture i thought she was gonna cry. but she just dropped her head, shook it and served the next point
.
the screen showed 15-15 after that shot cos it was clear it was anna's point even if martina's approach shot was in. so i was like "ok...that's just right..." then in the middle of the next point, the commentator asked "how is it 0-30?!" and apparently, the volley WAS called in. his exact words were "that's extraordinary. the volley was uh, a foot out!.......it's 15-all and no one's picked it up. i don't think anna.....is aware of what the score is!" anna lost the next point and he was like "now it's 0-40, but it's not. it's 15-30" anna totally lost her game and got broken and as they were exchanging sides he was like "well...that is a complete mystery. a lot of people here shaking their heads don't quite understand what has happened." i was like "what the fuck?!
"
anna ofcourse, went on to lose that second set
!. i'm not saying had she won that point she wouldn't have lost the match but it certainly wasn't the ideal call for her during that time
. . she was so down and the hole had just been dugged too deep after she lost her serve...
i have great memories of that match though
when for a winner, anna hit a great crosscourt forehand shot while going to the net after martina kept on getting the balls back deep.
also other points in the first set. and also martina and anna shaking hands and giving each other a peck on the cheek. anna also shook the umpire's hand after that and i was a little surprised she did cos she was so upset at her in other instances in the match. hehe,
she even gave the umpire's chair three thumps with ehr racket during a changeover. good thing anna doesn't harbor hard feelings though
....
darn, i can't wait for her to start playing again
!!!
