What was the most wrong line-call youve seen in womens tennis?Mine was at the Sanex 2001 Championships. The line call toward the end of the match when she was playing against Kim Clijsters. It nearly made her lose the match
Ummm i can think of one in womens tennis, but in the mens i can.
in ausopen 01, Greg vs Guga, Guga made a VERY wide serve on close to MP for greg and it was sooooooooooooo wide, and noone would over rule so Guga got an ace, and believe me was SOOO wide. The crowd went baslitic, boooing the umpire and all sorts.
Anyways Greg won
The best line dispute i seen, is ofcourse FrenchOpen 99 final...... Poor Marina...
Still cant think of a line call that i thought was wrong though... Hmmmmmmmm.... maybe later i remember.
Easy: Monica Seles' ace of Steffi Graf on set point in the first set TB...it was called out ?!?!?!
1999 Wimbledon, that one match between Venus and Steffi. A shot was clearly ouyt and got Venus pissed off!!!!
I've seen alot of bad line calls, but the one that stuck with me was 1998 Wimbledon Venus vs. Jana. Venus was up 5-1 in the first set and ended up losing in straight sets because she was so pissed at the umpire. I felt really bad for her that match. I'm glad she's not like that anymore. I couldn't stand it if she crumbled like that all the time. I like the steely Venus much better.
The most ridicilous linecall was in wimbledon 98 when Andre played Tommy haas and Andre hit a ball realy out(it wasn`t even close) and it was given in but he still lost the match though, other ridicilous ones were in Eatbourne 98 when Steffi played Anna and at 4:4 Steffi hit two clear winners and they were given out and then Steffi got so pissed that she lost the match and the english media said that she started to get Mcenroe behavior(just give you impression how pissed she was)
95 US Open Final
Seles v. Graf
Seles served at 6-5 in the tiebreak, setpoint, and hit an ace right down the 'T'. Monica pumped her fist and yelled "YES!", then the ball was called out. Late call, and an improper one.
Monica would have won the set, but instead lost
6.7(6) 6.0 3.6

Venus was leading 6-2 5-7 5-4, Conchita was serving with deuce, she hit a forehand and went to the net, venus tryied to pass her but conchita made a volley... the ball just was on the line but both umpires call it out and the fucking Venus also saying it was out, but in TV it was pretty clear it was in and the crow and the commentators saw it in also. It could be ad for Conchita and the match was very tied but well.. Venus seems to be liked by lines umpire in Usa.... i also remeber in her semis against Hingis at semis US Open'00 an ace which was out by a mille and it was called in...*lucky* *lucky*
Probably the most heartbreaking was that 20 minute 11th game of the 3rd set in the 1995 Wimbledon Final. Arantxa had like a bazillion game points and 2 of them looked like she served aces. Instead of winning the game the linesman called both of them out, I swear it looked like even Steffi was walking torwards her chair! This scenario kind of reminded me of the 95 U.S. Open final as mentioned. I don't know do the linesmen like Steffi or what?? LOL
Dokic v S. Williams at the US Open 2000! In the tiebreaks - I think Jelena was down 5-6 in the tiebreaks and Jelena hits backhand the ball to 'T'. It was clear 'in'! But Lineperson say it was out! I saw repeat video in 'T' and I still say it was in! Tony Roche and John Newcombe say it was in, too!
Oh yeah, the US Open lineperson is sucks! This year was so many mistakes! Hopefully, next year - they pick perfect lineperson.
most ridiculous point i've ever seen in one of anna's matches....this one was in anna and martina's semi-final match at chase last year
. anna had just lost the first set and was a little destroyed after that. ue's just crept into her game and she lost the tiebreak spraying forehands in the last two points
early in the second set anna was having trouble with her confidence
. she was down 0-15 first game of the set was on her serve. second serve, martina came in to the net with a deep forehand approach. it was pretty long, anna hit it back as a sort of a mini-lob then martina made a volley. it did look out and anna after hitting back that weak ball immediately looked at the umpire and made the gesture with her fingers how long it was. she DIDN'T see the volley martina made. it was a more than foot wide... literally. the volley was so horrible everyone was speechless but anna was so concentrated on the approach shot she didn't notice the linesperson on the other side was pointing out for martina's supposedly volley winner
. i didn't hear her say "OUT" however so anna had no clue, perhaps she didn't really say it. but she kept her hand pointed out for a good number of seconds. as anna was making the gesture i thought she was gonna cry. but she just dropped her head, shook it and served the next point
the screen showed 15-15 after that shot cos it was clear it was anna's point even if martina's approach shot was in. so i was like "ok...that's just right..." then in the middle of the next point, the commentator asked "how is it 0-30?!" and apparently, the volley WAS called in. his exact words were "that's extraordinary. the volley was uh, a foot out!.......it's 15-all and no one's picked it up. i don't think anna.....is aware of what the score is!" anna lost the next point and he was like "now it's 0-40, but it's not. it's 15-30" anna totally lost her game and got broken and as they were exchanging sides he was like "well...that is a complete mystery. a lot of people here shaking their heads don't quite understand what has happened." i was like "what the fuck?!
anna ofcourse, went on to lose that second set
!. i'm not saying had she won that point she wouldn't have lost the match but it certainly wasn't the ideal call for her during that time
. . she was so down and the hole had just been dugged too deep after she lost her serve...
i have great memories of that match though
when for a winner, anna hit a great crosscourt forehand shot while going to the net after martina kept on getting the balls back deep.
also other points in the first set. and also martina and anna shaking hands and giving each other a peck on the cheek. anna also shook the umpire's hand after that and i was a little surprised she did cos she was so upset at her in other instances in the match. hehe,
she even gave the umpire's chair three thumps with ehr racket during a changeover. good thing anna doesn't harbor hard feelings though
