Sevastova was so mentally tough when it counted. Saved a match point at 4-5, 2 at 5-6 and another 2 at 8-9. Mertens fell over at least 5 times during the final set, including twice at 6-6. Very entertaining match! Sevastova was just a bit braver towards the end and had a bit more ability to open the court up, it will be devastating for Elise.

Very exciting match with good quality and tension when neither deserves to lose ... Nasta saved 5MPs just to capitalize her first one ... take a rest to battle with Maki

Match of the year :worship:

What an incredible ballstriking by Sevastova and great countering by Mertens, wonderful defence but just a bit too inconsistent at the end.

Great for Sevastova to get this win after a tough clay season, keep going :yeah:

Match of the event so far. :clap2:

Not sure how many MPs Sevastova saved. Three? Four?* That was entertaining anyway. :)

Elise ? she should have won this. Sevastova's ballbashing got her through. Ugh.
Glad the pusher is out. Maybe she can go buy some better tennis shoes.

Basically,

Mertens defense deserves credit because she is just reducing the margins out there for Sevastova. Not her fault Sevastova has no clue how to construct points without making a dumb UE.
Complete contrast of style in final set: Sevastova was being far more proactive out there. Mertens stuck to defensive instincts knowing Sevastova was that more likely to make a mistake if the rally was prolonged (despite all of Sevastova's smarts, she does make stupid mistakes). But it is fitting Sevastova won this being the far more aggressive one out there, even when she had her 5(!!!) matchpoints, Mertens did not divest from her gameplan. Only has herself to blame. Also impressed Sevastova served it out to love, thought she would choke out there

Sevastova and Mertens. :worship:

Also she FINALLY is consistently solid at the slams this year instead of randomly peaking at the US Open.

Both players gave everything and this was a seriously entertaining match. Neither player deserved to lose but I'm very pleased Nastja won. As always she played with amazing imagination and variety.

How delightfully entertaining would a Sevastova v Martic quarterfinal be? :inlove:

Sevastova's ballbashing got her through. Ugh.
