I'm very confused about something.

Earlier today, it was announced that Silvia Soler-Espinosa withdrew from RG, and was being replaced by a lucky loser: Laurs Robson.

And indeed, the draw now shows Robson as a LL, to play Anabel Medina Garrigues.

How come that spot didn't go to Sesil Karatantcheva, who - like Robson - also lost in the third round of Quallies?

Not only is Karatantcheva's official RG ranking higher than Robson's (125 v. 126), but Sesil's RG Quallie seed was higher, too (14 v. 15).

Since they both lost in the third round of Quallies, how did Robson get the LL spot over Sesil? HELP!!

The reason they're a lucky loser is because all final round qualies are 'put into a hat' and drawn randomly. Hence, the loser is 'lucky'.

I thought it was randomly drawn between the 4 highest ranked player in the 3rd round  That what happened with the men's draw.
Yeah, I thought that's exactly what happened.

NO - the spot goes to the highest-ranked loser in the last qualifying round.
The WTA and ITF have different rules.

On the WTA tour, the highest ranked final round loser gets in. This is why we see tanks. See Martinez Sanchez in Strasbourg last week. She lost in the final round but when she started to have a tough match, she may not have pushed herself as hard knowing that she was in the main draw - regardless.

The ITF places the four highest ranked final round losers and draws them RANDOMLY. So that way, people do not tank and must fight to the end as it is never certain they'll get in as a LL.

Give me the ITF rules any day over the WTA's.

If there is more than 2 withdrawls, it is the number of withdrawl +2 .So if they need 3 LL, it will be a random draw of the five highest ranked final round losers.

Seems to be a consensus that this is what happened. Thanks! I knew the tennis-freak-obsessives on Tennis Forum would come through with an answer. That's why I love this place!:hearts:;)
