Henin angry over doping innuendo
By Mark Hodgkinson (Filed: 11/09/2003)

Justine Henin-Hardenne, the US Open champion, yesterday denied the innuendo from Kim Clijsters' entourage that she had been doped with performance-enhancing drugs when she outlasted her fellow Belgian in the New York final at the weekend.

Leo Clijsters, Kim's father, and other pundits, had hinted to journalists that Henin-Hardenne's physical transformation - an apparent increase in weight and muscle - was "unusual". This latest episode - last month Clijsters accused her rival of repeatedly faking injuries to distract opponents - confirmed that the pair, as one insider put it, "don't exactly invite each other round for cups of tea".

The two camps are now briefing against each other from their own safe sides of Belgium's linguistic divide; Clijsters and Co through the Flemish-speaking media, Henin-Hardenne and friends to the French-speaking press.

Henin-Hardenne's two-set victory was astonishing. Twenty hours before the final she was a serious doubt to even hobble out on court, suffering from dehydration and with a drip stuck in her arm after the three-hour semi-final. But the 21-year-old, who had been concerned that her game was too lightweight to contend with the brutish power of the Williams sisters, has been working hard with physical trainer Pat Etcheberry, so much so that she was frequently in tears.

"It's just ridiculous, so petty. I would have preferred to have been welcomed differently, with talk about my performances," Henin-Hardenne said at Brussels airport. "I have never been tempted by doping. My only doping is work. I am ready to undergo whatever test, wherever, whenever, to prove that my body is clean," she said.

Her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, went on the counter-attack. He said that Clijsters camp was spreading rumours out of jealousy and frustration that both of Henin-Hardenne's Grand Slams - the first was the French Open - have been at the expense of their girl. Clijsters, the world No 1, is the only woman since the WTA introduced the rankings in 1975 to top the list without having won a Slam. Rodriguez said, "I swear on the heads of my two sons that Justine has never taken doping products."

It has been suggested that this new spat may have helped along by Henin-Hardenne refusing to play alongside Clijsters in the final of the Fed Cup this November.

Justine invited Miss Clijsters to her wedding last year, but the latter had to go to Australia :tape:

It's funny now, cause now Justine's win over Clijsters in the final is simply "astonishing".
Before the rumour of Justine being doped was spread, her win was also astonishing, but the journalists noticed that Kim made 40 UE = comparing to 20 UE from Justine !

face it they were never friends to begin with no matter how hard their fans tried to make them be. They are two girls from a small country divided by language, culture, and class. Now they have two grandslams seperating them and they are not in possession of the more popular of the two who lost the finals!

This was bound to happen I can't believe none of you saw it coming.

 Justine hasn't decided yet on the Fed cup final. Clijsters already has and will not play.

Justine will play at the Olympics, they are still negotiating with Lei Clijsters for that one.
