Venus Williams Withdraws from US Open
Friday, August 22, 2003
Due to a stomach muscle injury that has plagued her since the spring, Venus Williams was forced to announce her withdrawal from the 2003 US Open. Venus, the 2000 and 2001 US Open champion, has devoted all of her time since competing in the Wimbledon singles final to rehabbing the injury, but she could not recover enough to participate.
“I kept thinking I would be able to compete,” Venus said today from New York, where she traveled to prepare for the tournament. “Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be. So, with regret, I have to pull out of this tournament and continue my recovery. I'm looking forward to playing again in the fall.”
From US Open Site: Venus had been the women's No. 4 seed. Katarina Srebotnik is now the No. 33 seed and will take her spot in the women's singles draw. Mary Pierce, who had been slated to play Srebotnik, will now play a qualifier in the first round.*
