06 2875 S.WILLIAMS
07 2780 J.DOKIC
08 2644 J.HENIN
09 2608 A.MAURESMO

10 2186 M.SELES

If Mauresmo and Henin make the QF's, they will be ranked ahead of Dokic and MAYBE Williams. I'm not sure about the quality points.

56 points for winning the 3rd round
90 points for winning the 4th round.

2790 Henin
2752 Mauresmo
2286 Seles - (Monica's 3rd round match was already in previous total.)

The lowest ranking player left is in the top hundred, and that's only one. So the worst they can do in terms of quality points is about 20 each match. Add that to each player, we would get ...

06 2875 S.WILLIAMS
07 2830 HENIN
08 2792 MAURESMO
09 2780 J.DOKIC

10 2306 SELES

So both Justine and Amelie probably have to make the SF's to gain a ranking position on Serena. Monica probably has to win the whole thing. So believe it or not, Serena may not lose any ranking positions despite not playing. And if she does, it's because someone played above their seeding, so it'll be totally deserved.

Fingon is right, but we all know that it really doesn't matter what Serena is ranked anyway, she'll always beat or challenge most players regardless of her current ranking.

Fingon, - like I said in the first post

"So believe it or not, Serena may not lose any ranking positions despite not playing. And if she does, it's because someone played above their seeding, so it'll be totally deserved."

Lindsay was guaranteed to lose ranking position no matter what
Jelena was going tolose a couple places unless a LOT of seeds were eliminated early.
Serena's ranking is totally safe unless someone plays better than their seeding.

It seems to me you're disagreeing with me, but citing the exact same facts as I am and drawing the same conclusion. Maybe I'm misreading your post?

Answer to Kart - SERENA had the fillowing in 2001:

1. 10 tournaments
2. 6 quarter finals
3. 4 finals
4. 3 titles

That is one way to stay in the top ten, I guess.

When are people gonna realize that it's quality of play over quanity of tourneys entered?

Serena plays few tourneys yes , but she wins. Some people enter 23 tourneys but only play half the points/games/matches as Serena.

In my mind Serena is in great position to rise in rank and fast. She only needs to win a slam to really jump. Also she won't have any OZ slam points to defend next year so that is a bonus at the start of 2003. :)

Actually I know that full well Dawn, I was implying that the quality of Serena's play has to have been high, without bothering to list her results but I see that Tee Rex has kindly done that.

Serena doesn't even need a slam to jump up, she's only defending QF results until Indian Wells and missed all the clay because she forced herself to play through her injury in Miami.

She could surpass several of those ranked above her in the coming months provided she stays injury free.
