Welcome to Stuttgart, Germany! This is the first event of the red clay season, and while it is indoors, the road to Roland Garros certainly begins here as players will look to gain form and confidence on this slower surface. The top seeds this week, Czech Květa Peschke and Slovene Katarina Srebotnik, certainly need both of these, as they have recently started playing together again after injuries and have not began in the best form. The second seeds will be a very interesting pair, as Indian Sania Mirza, who recently split from her usual partner, Russian Elena Vesnina, will instead partner Italian Flavia Pennetta, who has elected to play with Mirza this week rather than her usual compatriot partner, Francesca Schiavone. Meanwhile, Schiavone will team with another compatriot of hers, Roberta Vinci as a wildcard team this week, while Vesnina has joined forces with Chinese Shuai Peng as the third seeds. Another interesting team will be German wildcards Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic, the latter of whom is back from a low back stress fracture this week.
