PENILE IMPLANTS MAY BENEFIT IN VIAGRA MARKET BATTLE
By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - With two Viagra copycats poised to hit the U.S. market later this year, makers of penile implants are gearing up to reach men who cannot benefit from the drugs.

Boosted by Pfizer's marketing machine, the launch of Viagra in 1998 shed light on the once-taboo topic of erectile dysfunction, driving more than 20 million men to try the drug.

Two new competitors -- Eli Lilly and Co., with its biotech partner, ICOS Corp., and Bayer, with partner GlaxoSmithKline -- expect to receive regulatory approval for their Viagra-like drugs in the second half of this year. That promises a marketing battle that will prompt more men to seek treatment for the condition.

Erectile dysfunction, a disorder in which men consistently fail to maintain an erection, affects more than 30 million men in the United States. But only one out of 10 has sought treatment from a doctor.

"The discussion of erectile dysfunction is becoming more mainstream. You see the advertisements," said Douglas Kohrs, chief executive of American Medical Systems, which makes devices to treat male impotence.

He said his company plans to promote its penile implant to men whom drug treatment fails to help.

"This technology was not known by many people," Kohrs said in an interview at the annual meeting here of the American Urological Association.

"What has really helped us as a company has been Viagra," he said. "When Lilly and Bayer are out later this year, it will become even more mainstream, because those three companies will be competing for each other's patients."

Most patients who opt for a surgical solution to impotence have tried drug treatment and failed, primarily because of nerve damage or vascular disease that constricts blood flow to the penis.

American Medical's device consists of two tubes implanted in the penis, an activation device implanted in the scrotum and a saline-filled bulb implanted in the abdomen. When a man wants to achieve an erection, he flips a switch in his scrotum and the saline fills the tubes in the penis.

Kohrs said his company has sponsored a Web site that features a toll-free telephone number staffed by nurses who can identify potential users and even schedule appointments with physicians. It also plans to launch a print and radio advertising campaign within the next several weeks to drive traffic to the site (http://www.cure-ed.com).

Mentor Corp., maker of a similar implant product, also sees potential benefits from the impending marketing battle for the bedroom.

"We do anticipate a lot more interest," said Robert Sinclair, New York territory manager for the Santa Barbara, California-based company.

Dr. Steven Wilson, a urologist in Van Buren, Arkansas, who has performed more than 7,000 implants, said he believes the media blitz surrounding erectile dysfunction drugs can only help his practice.
"The more people who are bombarded with that multimillion marketing blitz, the more people will be coming out of the woodwork," Wilson said.

He said drugs fail in about 35 percent of cases, leaving a group of motivated patients with severe impotence seeking treatment options.

While drug treatments work for patients with mild to moderate impotence, Wilson said patients with severe impotence need a surgical solution. "When the penis is sick, we give it a drug. When the penis is broke, we fix it," he said.

A study of the Lilly/ICOS drug, Cialis, claimed 79 percent of U.S. men from diverse ethnic backgrounds benefited from the drug compared with those who received a sugar pill. The study also touted the drug's staying power, lasting up to 36 hours.

Bayer/Glaxo promoted results from a study of Levitra that claimed patients were three times more satisfied with the quality of their erection.

"The Viagra clones are coming," said analyst Thomas Gunderson of U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. "The question is when and who has the better one." Either way, he said, penile implant makers stand to benefit in the long run.

I hope Neely finds this article, for her own sake. I understand Ted Casablanca can never get it up for her. She is telling everyone it is a "gland" problem, but I think it is because Ted is gay, and despite Neely's boasts, she really is not the "dame" who can prove Ted is straight. Also, even if Ted is secretly straight, Neely is not attractive as women go, plus she is always loaded up on dolls and booze, not exactly a real turn on. She claims she is tired out from the studio, but Ted makes enough for the both of them, she did not have to renew her contract.

I always knew Neely had big balls, I guess now she has an implant to go along with them!

Deep down, I suspected she, of all women, would want an implant. She once reminded Mel, her first husband, after she made it big at her Hollywood Hills mansion that he wasn't the breadwinner of the family. He then told her he wanted a divorce and she told him to leave if he wanted to. He said he would leave, and that he was only going to take what belonged to him. It was his typewriter. Just imagine, you are married to a dame for at least 5 years, and the only thing you have in the world is a typewriter. Then they got divorced, and I guess Neely let him have his typewriter. Mel never blamed Neely, though, he told me she was such a nice kid, until someone put her name in lights and turned her into a lush.

yeah, well, someone put her name in lights, turned her into a lush, attached a couple of testicles and a penile implant. i agree with you, helen, neely just has not been the same since. now if only she would refrain from wearing those sheer gowns that unbeknownst to her, show every line and curve of that new appendage of hers on stage. neely always did stick out like a sore thumb...now more than ever...
