Pronunciation of players' names - updated

1051 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by gmt
Since I could afford to visit the board a bit these days, I was reminded that my tables on how to pronounce female players' names dearly needed an update!

That is done now, and you are welcome to check the versions for
English and for French speakers.

Hopefully there aren't too many gross mistakes. Please let me know if you find any

I am also thinking of adding more players from the past, for instance Grand Slam winners in the last 20 years or so.

(The updates for male players are listed on my computer but not uploaded as yet.)

Hey, GMT. Long time, no see.

BTW, I noticed at the WTA site, they now have a pronounciation guide for Chanda's first name. Were a lot of people screwing it up? (Other than Gimelstob's "Chawn-da"?)
I would really like to see a Spanish guide... I know I misspronounce quite a few. You wouldn't happen speak Spanish, would you gmt?
Hey Brian! I suppose that quite a few people pronounce it "Chandra"

¿Gallofa, como estas? I'll try to make one just for you, only you'll have to help me for the text and for the sounds that do not exist in Spanish

Josh, you mean that you like the sound of Rita's name with a French accent? Of course it somewhat spoils the myth of the "cutie kiss", but I can't help it, I'm afraid

All right, I have added the winners of all Grand Slam tournaments since 1951 (female singles only), the GS finalists since 1981, as well as Olympic medalists
Very nice page! Luv it

And hi Justinatortje!

The URL in my signature leads to the currently available tables:
- not too inaccurate versions in English, French, and for female players only, German and Spanish (the comments for the latter should be translated before long ),
- frankly simplistic versions in Croatian and Italian (for female players only).

My gratitude goes to a certain Vöglein who translated the explanatory notes in German, but does not want to be mentioned
Dutch and German names are kind of difficult to pronounce. Working on it though.

As for Croatian and Italian posters, they are very welcome to visit the simplified tables - that is, if either they want a good laugh or are really not very gifted for foreign languages
