Davenport Powers Her Way to Semifinals
Fourth-seeded Lindsay Davenport advanced to her fifth career Acura Classic semifinal as she powered her way past fellow American Chanda Rubin, 6-3, 6-3, on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
Rubin used a service break in the second game to jump out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Davenport won a long deuce game to get back on serve and went on to win nine of the next 10 games.
At 5-3 in the second set, Davenport easily served out the game at love to win the match in one-hour and 14 minutes.
Davenport advances to the Acura Classic semifinals, where she will meet the winner of the Kim Clijsters / Lisa Raymond match.
Davenport is making her eighth Acura Classic appearance.
Davenport improves her 2003 match record to 34-10.
Davenport is now 9-3 in head-to-head meetings with Rubin.
Davenport won the title here in 1998 when she defeated Mary Pierce in the final.
Davenport is ranked fifth in the world.
Rubin was making her ninth Acura Classic appearance.
Rubin’s 2003 match record is now 33-11.
By reaching this year’s quarterfinals, Rubin established a career-best at the

I have put in bold another point that suggests that Lindsay's serve is back to it's usual reliable self! Even thought she was down a break she was able to stay focused and serve well for the rest of the match. Also, she was able to pull through a long though game! These are all great signs of how Lindsay is doing. What I do find interesting is that before this match both Lindsay and Chanda had the same win/loss record for the year!?
Lindsay has the better record now (34-10 to Chanda's 33-11)

Clijsters Advances to Acura Classic Singles Final
Second-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium continued her domination this week at the Acura Classic as she eliminated fifth-seeded Lindsay Davenport, 6-3, 6-3 in a semifinal match on Stadium Court.
With her victory, the Belgian advances to her first career Acura Classic singles final.
Clijsters began the match on a strong note as she lost only three points in her first three service games. She broke Davenport to take a 4-2 lead and went on to serve out the first set in 31 minutes.
Despite two double faults, Davenport held serve to open the second set, but ended up falling behind 3-1 when she lost serve in the third game.
The American did break Clijsters for the only time in the match to tie the second set at 3-3, but Clijsters would sweep the last three games as she broke Davenport twice.
Serving to stay in the match at 5-3, Davenport fell behind 40-0, but rallied to take the game to deuce.
On her third match point, Clijsters won the match when Davenport netted a forehand.
“Although I’ve been playing a lot of tennis in singles as well as doubles, I’m still feeling very fit out there and I’m still enjoying it,” said Clijsters, who was scheduled to play an afternoon semifinal doubles match with Japan’s Ai Sugiyama.
Clijsters won all three of her previous matches this week at the La Costa Resort and Spa in under an hour. Her victory over Davenport was no different as she converted on four of 15 break points to win in 59 minutes.
“I was probably going for a bit too much.” Davenport said, “If she gets control of the rally, it’s all over. When it’s close, she plays the points tough.”
Davenport admitted that she was not at her best against Clijsters. “I didn’t have my A game.” she said. “I’m disappointed, I wish I could have played better today.”
Davenport committed six double faults and a total of 34 unforced errors in the match.
Clijsters advances to the final of the 2003 Acura Classic. She will face the winner of the Justine Henin-Hardenne / Svetlana Kuznetsova match.
