(Reuters) - A prominent professional tennis referee who was preparing to work at the U.S. Open in New York City was arrested on Tuesday on a felony murder warrant accusing her of bludgeoning her elderly husband to death with a coffee mug.

Lois Ann Goodman, 70, was taken into custody on a warrant filed a week ago by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office charging her with the April 17 slaying of her husband, Alan Goodman, who was 80 years old, prosecutors said.

The district attorney's office said Goodman would remain in custody in New York while awaiting extradition to Los Angeles, where she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors said they would ask for her bail to be set at $1 million.

She is accused of killing her husband by beating him to death with a coffee mug at the couple's home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles.
Goodman is well known in tennis circles and was preparing to serve as a referee at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships tournament, a district attorney's office spokeswoman, Jane Robison, said.

The tournament opens on Monday in New York with the men's and women's first-round matches.

U.S. Open Tennis Ref Arrested in Midtown in Husband's Slaying

Lois Ann Goodman, 70, is suspected of of bludgeoning her 80-year-old husband to death with a coffee mug in Los Angeles in April

A high-profile referee who officiates at U.S. Open tennis matches was arrested in Midtown Tuesday on suspicion of bludgeoning her 80-year-old husband to death with a coffee mug in Los Angeles in April, authorities said.
NYPD and LAPD detectives arrested Lois Ann Goodman, 70, at the Sheraton Hotel in Midtown Tuesday afternoon. She is expected to be charged with murder and extradited to the West Coast.

Goodman is alleged to have bludgeoned her husband with a coffee mug in their home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles in April, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Alan Goodman's April 17 death was originally ruled suspicious by police, but investigators could not determine if foul play was involved, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A full homicide investigation eventually found on Aug. 2 that Goodman had been killed and his wife was the "prime suspect," an LAPD press release stated.

A murder arrest warrant was obtained last week in Los Angeles, but police found that Lois Ann Goodman was in New York officiating qualifying tennis matches at the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in Flushing.

Goodman will be held in a Manhattan jail until a forthcoming court appearance, the LAPD said. She will then be extradited back to Los Angeles, the department said.

Prosecutors plan to ask for $1 million bail, the LA district attorney's office said. Goodman faces life in prison.

I wonder if she did it, why she did it and how long they were married. Bit bizarre to kill your husband at that age.

Apart from the whole story being a tragedy:

I wonder why the USOpen are taking persons aged 70
as referees?
I know, right? Also 'prominent'? She's 70! :help::lol:
