Let's say that actually does happen [and as much as I would like to, I don't think it will]...if Serena remains #1, do you think that Serena would be treated like Hingis...a "false" #1?

good question

if Venus just turns the tables on Rena, meaning beating her in the GS finals, but Rena beats Everyone else

then Venus may not get that #1 rank untill after the Us Open

2 top ten players who can't win
1 with no real weapon
2 top 12 players on medical watch
2 top 12 players moving backwards

Looks like its time for some changes?

3 Russians advancing (hopefully so in Bovina's case, calmly in Myskina's)

and that leaves:

Patty who should be moving back into the top 10 but isn't (yet)
and Meghann who is moving the right way.

and a whole lot of talent lurking in the 30-40 rankings bracket that has future top 25 oozing out of their rackets....

nice analysis, as always Volcana

yes, just remember 1864 with TWELVE tournaments

not too shabby
Which is pretty close to Jennifer's average. And Jen seems to take magic health pills. As far as Monica has fallen, I STILL believe that at the moment she is the 7th best player on tour. And capable of moving back up in that pecking order.

Ummmm............It annoys me when you dismiss Chanda as a player with out a big weapon. Its quite obvious you have never seen Chanda play before. There is no denying the fact Rubin is streaky, but when her strokes are on target, she's one of the most exciting players on the tour, hitting forehands that mix power, angles, and topspin with devastating effect.

Of course I've never seen her play. That wasn't her at Roland Garros vs Venus last year. That wasn't her beating Serena at L.A. Decent serve but no ace machine. Moves well, comes in on short balls. Crisp strokes off both sides and a lotta brains. In playing style probably the closest thing to Martina Hingis left around. (not close mind you, but more than most.) But no shot to match the Capriati forehand, or Venus' backhand, or Serena's serve.

That wasn't Chanda in the early 90's who was the next Althea Gibson after Zina Garrison was the next Althea Gibson. Not that either of them played like her, but being Black, and tennis being tennis, that's what was written.

Nope. Sorry. Never saw the girl play. Sat through the whole Eastbourne final and missed her. I nodded out during introductions and by the time I woke up, the doubles final had started. One day, thank god, they'll invent videotape.

I admit the whole "they'll invent videotape" statement was very cute. I like your attempt at sarcasm. The fact remains that I whole-heartedly disagree with your point that Chanda does not have a decisive weapon. Chanda's forehand is one of the most powerful shot in women's tennis.

Pfft...Jen's way of not sustaining injuries is to keep that small layer of fat all over her body to protect all her organs and bones and muscles and tendons and what not =)

To add to what P2 said, Chanda's forehand is one of the most powerful shots in the history of tennis. She was one of only two players who could consistently push Steffi behind the baseline just by sheer power of shot. (Pierce was the other.) Seles, Capriati, Davenport, Williams(2), none of them could do it. The US Fed Cup practice partners (male) said Rubin hit the hardest of the group, which included all of the players from my prior sentence. If she doesn't have a weapon, then those others don't, at least not on the ground. And I guess Steffi didn't have a weapon either.

Saying Chanda doesn't have a weapon is like saying Andre doesn't have a weapon. Just because one chooses to temper one's power for the sake of consistency, doesn't mean it isn't still available. Ask one of Chanda's recent opponents, against whom she averaged about 2 winners per game. Kind of hard to do without a weapon.

Of course, Volcana not long ago said Dementieva had a "nuclear" device for a forehand. Care to have Elena and Chanda rip forehands at a radar gun and see whose comes out faster?

Don't worry, Volcana. I like your whimsical musings. May they never end. So long as they remain whimsical, that is.

King Lindsay, you really have a major 'hate' on for Monica, don't you? I'd be very surprised if any of your archived posts turned up even the slightest compliment. Your namesake continues to treat Seles with more respect than you ever have (or, apparently, ever will)....
