Life has been very unfair with Monica.I hope she'll be strong enough to keep playing. But I also hope she doesn't come back until her feet are not ok.It's no sense risking health for tennis.
But please Monica, don't retire!!!All the magic of tennis will be gone with you that day.

With all that is going on with Monica and the foot injury - we have started a new poll. Come give your 2 cents worth on what you think the solution to Monica's problem should be.

Please don't retire!!! I lost Monica in 1993; the thought of losing her again in 2003 is unbearable. If it can't get better, I hope Monica would have the surgery and the long break, but would refuse to give up her tennis-career like Karina Habsudová, who has been out since the Australian Open 2002 with a ruptured Achilles tendon (Karina is four months older than Monica) but still entertains the possibility of a comeback.

Does anybody know if a surgery would be of any help? I think that the times she can use her foot without pain are getting more an more shorter. I'm sure that this must be terrible to wait until the pain comes back. PLease Monica do the right thing and let your foot heal completely. I only hope that she doesn't want to retire because of it. I couldn't stand to lose my two favourites at rather the same time. I would lose interest in tennis because I don't like any of the other players half as much as I like Monica and liked (still like) Arantxa.

Wave,I saw Arantxa on spanish tv today in an interview. She's the director of MAdrid tournament, being held this week. She looked happy and relaxed, joking all the time. She said she's been at home since she retired (not even travelled away from Barcelona) and only played tennis 4 or 5 times since her retirement. She's very proud for her tennis career, tennis gave her all and her fans were superb with her.

I'm sure Monica will come back when recovered for at least a good-bye year to please her fans.

That last year will be her best yet!

Thanks for this information, Vero!
It's good to know that she is happy with her life. It must be a wonderful feeling not being in the news as often.
But I think it will be still hard to me looking at Roland Garros' entry list with her name missing.

Once again: Have we any information on a surgery that would help Monica's foot?

Well, I think surgery would, like most surgery, most likely work, but there's always that chance that it won't and you have to have it again later...Unfortunately, I think Monica has it set in her mind that she's almost done with her career, so she doesn't want to make any long-term investments that would, I think, really make her stronger and enable her to play for a little longer(perhaps to 35!). However, it would take a fitness-committment while she was off the tour recovering(much like Davenport's diet) and willingness to come back with a less than great ranking...

I agree ktwtennis. I also feel as if Monica is already ready - to hang it up. I get the feeling by some interviews, that she doesn't want to have to take time off the tour to get her foot totally healed - and then come back when her ranking has fallen far. I sure wish she was just upset at the time - and I am hoping the laser surgery is a success - and she decides to play longer. I wish she would have the full blown foot surgery - and give next year a run even if her ranking has fallen. It would give her a better chance to win something big before she does hang it up. But of course it is totally up to her, and I support her with whatever decision she decides to do. I just wish she could go out with a big win!

Best wishes to Monica and her foot!
