This is a controversial thread and the main point I want to make is what players do you think now at their current ranking are ranked too high and will likely fall off next year!!!

- My general consensus is that Henin at #6, Mauresomo at #7, Hingis at#4?, Coetzer at #16-17, and other players like NAgyova, Kremer, Tanasugarn, Panova, will all fall in their ranking next year!!! Of course, I'm not mentioning everyone who I think is ranked too high!!!

- Capriati being the #1 player in the world seems to many people to be too high of a ranking!!! My general opinion is that she deserves her ranking in that she earned it!!! However, it is not likely that she will maintain this ranking if the Williams sisters play more tournaments!!! In short, I think Capriati can maintain the #1 rankning, but to do that she needs to win the Championships and keep her level of play high next year!!!

amanda's rank is not to high, she reached a quarterfinal of a grandslam, won a title, got to the final of a tier 1, and madethe semis in germany and luxemburg last week

Capriati - clearly too high. Alternative ranking systems ( that are based on results of all matches regardelss of tournament where they played )
place her at #5 at best.

Hingis - well, the first time derivative of her rankings is clearly negative, and it will stay so for
quite a while.

Dokic - she is going up, but her record against top 10 is probably somethnig like 1-12 or 2:13, her Slam record is quite poor too for a Top 10 player.
At the same time has very few bad losses, and that helped her to succeed at several weak draw tournaments, which explains her rankings.

ys, regardless of her record against other top 10ers, which outside top 10 player earns Jelena's spot more than she does??
She beat Tauziat, Dementieva, Farina-Elia and other contenders and has proven herself to be more consistent than others.

Add to that 3 heavy singles titles (2 Tier I's, 1 Tier II), 6 finals, 9 semifinals and the competition is virtually blown away.

As for Slam results, she had them before and she will have them again, next year.
No more losing to Davenport in three tough sets in the 1st round of Au Open

Everyone who has a certain ranking deserves to be ranked where they are.
Everyone who has accumulated a certain amount of points, has proved they deserve to be where they are.

Once again, I fail to understand what is so difficult to comprehend about the ranking system. Why is it such a dominant topic of discussion?

Capriati/RafterFan's prime candidates for over-ranking:
- My general consensus is that Henin at #6, Mauresomo at #7, Hingis at#4?, Coetzer at #16-17, and other players...SNIP...

The thing about those four players (Henin, Mauresmo, Hingis and Coetzer) is that they all did much better the first half of the year than in the latter half. Perhaps slower courts suit them [and Capriati] better than the faster ones. Is it that we're forgetting that these rankings are representative of a full year's worth of results?

Maybe I'm just biased towards the little people (Coetzer, Henin, Hingis and co.) but I think they fully deserve to be ranked around where they are. Hingis made two slam semis and a slam final as well as starting off with Sydney. Henin made a slam semi and a slam final, won a grass title in between and picked up two Rebound Ace titles. Coetzer made quarters and picked up Acapulco.

And Mauresmo, who isn't a little person, has historically done better on Rebound Ace and she has those four titles from the first half of the year (she was the first to grab four!).

I think the perception of these players being overranked is due to some sort of short-term memory.

I see people naming Justine and Kim. I think they certainly deserve their place in the rankings, and they will become even better!!! Such talented players and then they don't deserve it???pffffff

Not again this boring ranking discussion stuff I don't really know what you guys don't understand on rankings? It's pure mathematics!

If you say who do you think will drop in the rankings over the coming months/year, then okay, you can have a discussion.

Becca, how difficult is it to comprehend what rankings are supposed to be about?
OK, once again, the function of rankings is to determine who is better, I.E., to be a functional predictor. If player A is ranked higher than player B, than rankings are predicting player A to beat player B more often than vice versa. If that doesn't work, than you can call it whatever you want - championship, race, fat ass rankings, whatever, but it is not what would be right tennis rankings.

You wont't convince me that it is the right #1, that has negative balance against both #2 and #3.

The right rankings of #1 would single out a player who would be predicted to be most, if not all,
her closest opponents. And in the current situation there is only one player that fits the description - Venus Williams. She, however, seems to hate mere idea of becoming #1.

That's of course only possible in an ideal situation (anyone playing the same amount of tournaments, nobody having "black beasts", ...). But you do have a point there....

jennifer and venus both won the slams, so they are the top two, but week in week out jennifer is the one who has competed and made the semis and finals of practically every tourny she has entered this year, so i would put her on top! she will fall next year though, because i honestly feel that even she can't keep this amazing run going for much longer!
