Jennifer has won her first title since the Australian 2002, the result of both her semi and final opponents Amelie and Lindsay retiring in the second sets of their matches.

To be fair, today Jennifer was hitting shots all over the court even before Lindsay retired due to her toe, 6/2 4/0.

Do you think Jennifer is a contender for the US Open title, or is her Pilot Pen win a fluke making her look like a favorite when she isn't?

A contender and this is just what she needed to realize it herself...... Great week Jenny!

Well, neither really. It puts her back into contention to an extent - it's proved that she at least is over her shoulder injury, and it won't be a factor at the US Open. On the other hand, what's she actually done here? Made matches against Bovina and Pistolesi much harder than she should have, then benefited from a sick Mauresmo and hobbled Davenport withdrawing. It doesn't mean she's NOT a contender, but it doesn't mean she's a favourite either.

No doubt about it ......She was a contender for the USO crown with or without this title .

However this title win makes her now a stronger contender. She now has won three set matches and has wins over other top ten players ranked above her !Watchout Justine and Kim !!

Please.....Jennifer was playing great tennis last night and today, regardless of her opponents. Her opponent retiring had nothing to do with her hitting smoking forehands and being consistent with her serve. It's the best she has played in a long time and I am encouraged by it greatly. She would have won both matches even in the player didn't retire. Don't discredit Jen's wins....she earned them all.

Wait a sec....i just saw the "hobbling Davenport" above and have to respond. I like Lindsay and I really feel for her pain and disappointment (I even cried with her), but she was not "hobbling" until the last two games or so. Jen was clearly playing better the whole match, so don't give me that crap about Lindsay losing because of her toe injury.

poor jen her title is tainted from injury withdrawals

she played well and might have won if both her opponents were healthy but we only know what did happen and what did happen was she played two hampered players who had to withdraw due to injury.

Anyway because of that I say both. She was always a contender the minute Venus and Serena withdrew. She was "lucky" for lack of a better word that at the end her opponents due to physical reasons weren't up to the challenge.

I don't think Amelie started out ill. I don't think Lindsay started out with her toe inflamed. Jen was playing winning tennis through the first sets. I suspect Jen knows that and has the confidence she'd have if the matches were finished.

She's a contender and she was lucky. How can you not call winning a title due to two retirements not lucky? would she have won if they were healthy? who knows?

I'd bet you didn't even watch her matches against Bovina and Pistolesi...

Amelie wasn't even sick until Jen started killing her, she just was a baby so she pulled out. Jen would have beaten both amelie and lindsay. People who say it's just luck are bitter and upset that Jen can win the USO.

Tratree - Of course her hobbled opponents have something to do with it!! If Amelie was sick, her movement was likely hurt, which means she couldn't get to balls she normally would get to...which makes Jennifer's shots look better. The same could be said of Lindsay.

But they say Lindsays toed didnt effect her in the first set and jennifer won that set 6-2 so she was obviously playing the better tennis - same for the amelie match we dont really know know how bad her stomach was and how much it effected her in the first set which jennifer won 6-3 . Give this girl some credit she's always getting a hard time!

She would always be a contender if she played as well as she did today. Davenport's retirement has nothing to do with it, and doesn't take any of Capriati's superb play away.

she's a contender, she was a contender before but now she has the confidence of a title behind which could pull up her game making her a biiger threat. however it would have been nice if she had pulled one of the matches out in a tight 3 setter, she's had problems with 3 set matches against the top players it just makes me wonder whether she could pull them out at the open with a title behind her or whether she'll still have the problem with them.

she is a big contender i'd put her in the top 3 with kim and justine. mauresmo was beaten by dementieva, dementieva has been playing well but imo that puts mauresmo behind the others.

in all honesty with davenport being injured and the williams sisters out my top 4 favourties would be:

1) justine
2) kim
3) capriati
4) dementieva

We all know that Jennifer "No talent, all luck" Capriati won by luck. I mean how lucky can you get losing the first set to Amelie 6-0 about to get double bageled then Amelie having to retire. And then to top it off Jennifer was getting smoked 6-0, 4-0 by Lindsay and then Lindsay retires. I have never seen so much luck. Does Jennifer deserve her title, would she have come back? Who knows. If Jenn had won the first sets against Linds and Amelie, then maybe...
