HOBART, Australia (AP) -- Mary Pierce overcame rain interruptions and a niggling hamstring complaint Tuesday to beat American Kristina Brandi 6-0, 6-3 at the Tasmanian International.

Pierce, the former Australian and French Open champion, played with her left thigh strapped to support a hamstring she strained in an exhibition event in Hong Kong last week. The Frenchwoman slumped to a No. 130 world ranking in 2001 while struggling with ankle and back injuries.

In other results, top-seeded Rita Grande of Italy beat Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary 6-4, 6-3, and second-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina beat Elena Tatarkova of the Ukraine 6-3, 6-3.

Fifth-seeded Meilen Tu of the United States topped Cara Black of Zimbabwe 6-4, 6-3.
