Former Charleston finalist Patty Schnyder and fellow top 10 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player Nadia Petrova have entered the 2006 Family Circle Cup. Petrova and Schnyder will join a field that features two-time French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, Mary Pierce, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

The Family Circle Cup, the only Tier I clay-court event in the United States, will be held April 8-16th at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

"This year’s player field will feature some of the most talented players in the world," said Robin Reynolds, Facility and Tournament Director of the Family Circle Cup."“Patty and Nadia are two exciting players to watch, and over the years, they have both enjoyed great success here at the Family Circle Cup."

Schnyder will be making her 10th appearance at the Family Circle Cup in April. Her best performance at the Cup came in 2002 when she beat World No. 1 Jennifer Capriati, saved a match point to edge Serena Williams and defeated Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce in succession to reach her first career Tier I final where she fell to former French Open champion Iva Majoli. The lefty from Switzerland has also defeated the likes of Lisa Raymond, Lindsay Davenport, and Nicole Vaidisova en route to three additional Family Circle Cup semifinal appearances in 1999, 2004 and 2005. One of the best seasons in Schnyder’s career came in 2005. The twelve-year veteran reached the quarterfinals or better at 15 Tour events during the 2005 campaign, winning titles at Gold Coast and Cincinnati, and reaching the finals at Rome, Zurich and Linz. Schnyder ended the 2005 season with a world No. 7 ranking, the highest of her career, and surpassed the $4 million dollar mark in career earnings. Schnyder started the 2006 season impressively with her third consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open.

Petrova reached the quarterfinals or better at 17 Tour events last year. The highlight of her season was the capture of her career-first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title at Linz, where she stopped Schnyder in three sets. Petrova ended the 2005 season with a No. 9 ranking, and surpassed $1 million in season prize money for the first time in her career. Petrova started the 2006 campaign with an impressive showing during the Australian swing of the Tour, reaching the semifinals at Auckland, quarterfinals at Sydney and the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. She has now reached the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slam events. Petrova is a two-time Charleston quarterfinalist.
