Pennetta, Vinci Guide Italy Into Fed Cup Quarters

LINKOPING, Sweden (Reuters) - Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci sealed Italy's passage into the Fed Cup quarter-finals after beating Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson and Maria Wolfbrandt 6-2 6-1 in the deciding doubles on Sunday.

The Italians will face the United States, who trounced the Czech Republic, in the last eight in July.

Pennetta became the team's hero after winning all three of her matches over the weekend.

In the opening match of the day, the Italian gave her country a 2-1 lead after edging past home favorite Arvidsson 6-0 6-4.

Looking weary following her three-hour marathon win over Antonella Serra Zanetti on Saturday, Arvidsson was no match for Pennetta, who controlled the match from the baseline.

The unheralded Hanna Nooni, ranked just 443 in the world, then kept Swedish hopes alive by leveling the tie at 2-2 with a 0-6 6-2 6-4 over Serra Zanetti.

But the Italians were never threatened in the doubles as Pennetta and Vinci needed just 57 minutes to clinch the match.
